so i did my first mountain bike race. norba national at snow shoe west virginia. i raced the expert 19 to 24 age group about 30 guys.. the night before it had rained like hell so the course was nothing but mud (kinda like cross nationals but with rocks and roots) bad start but when it we got to the really bad stuff i choose to run instead of ride and made up and passed a few riders... i felt pretty good and my heartrate was in a good zone about 175 to 190. some good climbing inbetween the mud tech sections i did the first lap in just under an hour i had no clue where i was in relation to the race b/c some of the other categories that started behind us had started to catch up and pass me. Just kept in a rythm i was comfortable with and tried to stay upright. i finished up strong on the final climb and finishing time about 2hours 5 min. waited around for the results and finished 14th... a little ways off the front but hell for my first real mountain bike race and conditions i'll take it.

there arent any races this weekend... kinda weird but they start up next weekend...

i don't like the humidity..

thank's steve. i appreciate your offer, i've got other stuff to ride, it's pretty much like going from driving a ferrari all day to driving a ford escort. i didn't think i was a bike snob, but i guess i'm turning into one. having a well built frame makes a big difference.

question:

in other news, i got a set of older never used campy cranks (taper) and a dura ace bottom bracket (also taper), can i use these together w/o fucking up my cranks?

if i where you i would check at maxwell st., i know a few kids who've gotten bikes stolen and found them there.

but that really sucks man...

i'd imagine it would be pretty funny to see a bike thief speed off on a brakeless fixie right through traffic.

are you riding an alrigt bike now?

peace, good luck

DO NOT BUY THEM!!!!!!!!!

i actually bought a similar one myself about a year and a half ago at a swap not realizing what it was. these bikes are road frames built on road cranks and road freewheel hubs. theres a couple things that are shady about them.

-most of the bikes i saw were respaced not by re-dishing the wheel, but by flipping over the BB spindle so as to achieve a more straight chainline. the chainline still remained pretty horrible.

-in my case, the frame was bent right behind the head tube on the down and top tubes. although it was steel, this is sketchy and probably shouldnt have been sold to me.

-i also realized a while later that the drive side arm had a small crack right where the arm meets the spider. this could have proved pretty dangerous.

-the worst and most dangerous aspect of these bikes is that the hub is fixed by slapping on a track cog and then tightening down a lock ring from a bottom bracket adjustable cup. in some cases the guy had used lock tite, in others it was just tightened against the cog. in either case, the ring will eventually slip because it is not as strong as an actual lockring, and is not reverse threaded like a true track hub so rather than tightening with reverse force (from stopping or skidding), it will either just unthread and fall off, or more likely strip apart and ruin the threads on the hub.

-all the bikes were pretty shoddily assembled as well. some of them had totally loose bottom brackets, untensioned or unbalanced wheels, small deformities in the frame (which could be fatal or just aesthetic), and lacked grease in key areas.

basically i would warn against buying a bike you cannot look at in person, but ESPECIALLY not one of these things. unless youre just buying it cause its an ok frame and its dirt cheap and you arent going to pedal around on that deathtrap "fixed" hub.

DEFORMATION...I would like to e-mail you...I have a few questions about re-dished wheels.

they use a slightly different taper, so i wouldn't suggest it.

I have a question......

if a cog is screwed directly onto a hub....then that is a bad thing right?

How can you tell if this was the case.

anyone?? help. Im trying to bulid a bike but I dont want to fuck it up.

Any recommendations on Clipless Pedals? I am currently riding with WTB Clipless pedals... I prefer clipless but with these I clip out when I dont want to and nearly kill myself by fucking my skid up and shooting into on-coming traffic... I am looking at Clipless Times right now, they are fresh, but really expensive. Oh, as far as I am concerned cages suck.

Boston Wins AGAIN!

I know there are a bunch of messengers up on here

and thought you should know Boston is still faster

than you all. My boy took Top North American and

third overall at the CMWC's in Edmonton this weekend.

If you were there you know this though.

So load on the miles for next year 'cause he's gonna

defend it again and again and again.

This guy is a delivery monster!

Hey CinnToastCrunk

Congrats on the sponsorship.

Not easy to obtain. I have been reading your race reports

and it does not surprise me. You're young with potential.

Will you be traveling up the coast to New England?

Gloucester is a very big race among others.

Worth the trip, all the heavy hitters show up and

the courses up here are nasty. Even the local competion

has depth.

Gotta go grab some miles now,

Ride safe nerds!
