A "young, attractive and popular" female teacher at an inner-west Sydney high school told a 17-year-old student that he was "more mature" than his peers before meeting up with him to have sex, a court has been told.

The 30-year-old PE teacher, who can only be identified as CR, got to know the boy in 2005 while she was coaching the Catholic school's girls' football team and he was the captain of the boys' team.

They exchanged numbers after an outing to Luna Park and she allegedly picked him up from his home on three occasions to drive to a secluded spot near St George Stadium where they chatted and kissed in her car and he digitally penetrated her, the Sydney District Court heard.

"I just remember her saying I was one of the more mature guys at that school and that I didn't feel like a student. It felt more like friends," the former student, now 25, told the court.

CR, who was 22 at the time, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of sexual intercourse with a person under special care.

The jury was told the sexual intercourse charges were based on the allegation the boy digitally penetrated the teacher on each occasion.

Her barrister, Phillip Boulten, SC, said she had been the subject of "empty and false claims".

"She was the subject of a lot of attention at school because she was young, attractive and popular," he said.

The former student admitted to fantasising about the "athletic" and "attractive" teacher with his friends and later telling at least two of them that he was seeing her but he denied making up the claims to "big note" himself in front of friends.

He said that, after secret meetings on three consecutive Wednesday evenings, CR started talking about wanting children and a serious relationship.

"I was scared so I told her I think she should be [a] friend," he said.

He claimed this angered her and they didn't speak again until 2008 when Catholic education officials investigated the matter before handing it over to Marrickville police, who made an arrest last year.

The court heard that CR called the student in tears and asked him to deny their relationship, which he did.

"I did it for myself. I was afraid, I was scared," he said. "Even if she didn't call me, I would have denied it anyway."

The trial before Judge Leonie Flannery continues.
