I’ll be writing out stupid essays tonight that I shouldn’t even be having to do, considering the program I’m in. The gym is closed, as are the liquor stores. There’s a couple of 24s at my buddy’s house, but I can’t do an essay there. I guess I’ll be smoking weed all night. Maybe I’ll rent a game.

  • 4 weeks later...

kids, this is what a midterm looks like:

Religion 263

Father Bouboutisis is

-a cleric in the Orthodox Church

-Serves as a teacher of biblical Greek in Florida

-provided my class with basic information on Orthodoxy

Overview:

-Why is the Orthodox voice important in the Holy Land?

1. Presence-Its the largest non-Islamic Palestinian group

2. Where Christianity originated, a.k.a. native communities are orthodox.

3.The Orthodox Churches (loosely Greek and Armenian Orthodox) have inherited HUGE amounts of land

4. Jerusalem is on of the 4 centers of Christianity- From Jeruslame to Antioch (Syrian Orthodox), missions to Asia came from here. From Jerusalem to Rome (which is not a main center fyi) From Jerusalem to Alexandria (Coptic and Ethiopian Orthodox)-missions to Africa came from here. From Alexandria and Antioch to Constantinople- missions to the Balkans, Russia. Across the Bearing straight to Alaska all came from here.

-All of the 4 centers were seen as equal, it wasnt until much much later that soem were placed above others in importance.

Sources of Traditions in the Orthodox Church

-Ecumene (Whole Community-Mediterenean World)

-Until about 100, were all the same tradition

-The entire tradition was Siro-Palestinian in roots (Mar Sabah-the place in Jerusalem where traditions started).

-Eventually there was a Byzantine East and a Latin West

-Itrosuces a very controversial piece in the Nicene Creed (Samuel Huntingtons Clahs of Cicvilization talks about this Nicene Creed)

-The Orthodox and Latin Churches are innately different/different civiilizations

-This proves true with Islam

-Caliphs become protectors of Orthodox hristianity, especially with the Crusades.

The Crusades:

-Latin leaders were placed in charge in the Holy Lands

-Orthodox leaders were margnilazed under the Latin system

Differences were being established between the East and the West

-west- power was centralizd

-east de centralized appeared disorganized

-west-increasingly emphasised oneness of trinity

-east- emphasized the threeness of trinity

-east-multilingual

-west-mnolingual-latin

-east-bishops are elected by the people

-west-concerned about rules

-east-exceptions to rules

The final break happened in 1054

The 1204 AD 4th crusade sealed the divorce between Latin and Orthodox Christendom with

-the sac of Constantinople

-Desecration of Holy Shrines

-Artwork, icons, etc.. were taken to Western museums and galleries

The Ottoman Emprie rose after the sac of Constantinolple

-Mehmet the Great brought things under control

-Changed the name of Constantinople(Latin) to Istanbu(Greek)

-The Patriach saved RUMPATRIKHANESI-the orthodox patriarchy in Istanbul by arguing to come under mehmet, it would lead to their protection under the majority of the sultans

With the decline of the Ottoman Empire, the tolerance that had existed (but had also been in decline over some time) collapsed in the wake of Greek, Balkan, and Turkish Nationalism in the 19th century.

to be continued.....
