vandal suspects tailed by private detectives

graffiti sting flops

private detectives have been tailing suspected graffiti vandals, on city council money.

the attempted sting opperation lasted 8 days, cost about £6,000 and caught nobody.

but city enviro-crime officers insist it wsa worth the cash - and might be repeated.

walls near the suspects homes were specially cleaned as a ''honey trap'' during the secret surveillance.

but the walls remained bare, while the suspects were ''as good as gold''.

barrie james, nottingham city council public health service manager, said '' it is dissapointing, having put the research in, that we didn't catch anybody.''

private detectives conducted 2 4 day surveillance sessions in june and earlier this month, watching a total of 4 suspects in bullwell, sherwood and lenton.

but allthough the detectives gathered photos of the suspects and information on their movements, none of them appeared to be interested in producing graffiti on those days.

mr james said the teenages were identified by by anomomous callers to the 'name that tag' hotline, who had left names or addresses for the suspects.

tags are graffiti signatures. the hotline offers a £500 reward for information that leads to the tagger being charged.

''it could have been the same person ringing again and again, admitted mr james.

but he said some of the individuals who were watched had been identified by 2 or 3 different callers.

the intelligence gathered would be kept on file for possible future use, mr james said. if caught, those commiting graffiti acts can now be given a £50 fixed penalty fine.

if they are taken to court on a more serious criminal damage charge, the fine could run up to £2,500, depending on the damaged caused.

graffiti costs the council £80,000 a year in clean up fees and mr james said the opperation was worth paying for.

;) ;) ;) ;)
