While undertaking a planned operation at the Upfield siding, the APU had under observation two vandals spraying paint on the side of a stabled train. The APU officers moved in and apprehended a male and from his mural, immediately identified a known vandal SODEM. SODEM has had vandalised eight Connex trains in the last two months costing a conservative estimate of $1000 in lost revenue and fines due to PWMs (Passenger Weighted Minutes). On being apprehended, SODEM initially tried to impress the arresting APU officers his mastery of Muay Thai or Thai boxing. The officers were unimpressed and the male was restrained until the arrival of the local Transit Police. Custody of the offender and all evidence were handed over to the Transit Police, including a camera phone and various items of clothing amongst other incriminating evidence. The other vandal, who evidently had no Muay Thai training, departed so rapidly that he dropped his bag of spray cans and a very expensive looking camcorder. This brought the evidence dropped by both offenders to a total of: • 15 spray cans • Two handy cams Knowing the modus operandi of these vandals, it’s unlikely they would have stopped at just two murals on the train, preferring to damage much more of the train.
