Weapon X
oh yeah, I have a friend’s art show to go to this weekend as well, I just remembered. Even though that means free wine, I’m not gonna go unless I have a date. Devilush, in case you didn’t see my Clone High Gandhi asking in the sin city thread – what the hell made you stop drinking? Stop kidding yourself!
Devilush
hahaha oh come on now. i'm not an alcoholic! what made me stop drinking......thanksgiving and my birthday. i got so wasted that it really did make me stop. we have gin at the house and i was making someone a drink and i took a whiff of it and almost threw up. i dont drink heavy liquor anymore. i just drink beer and the occasional cider. which is better than what i was drinking before. SteveAustin
Re: this one does.. I feel betrayed...you tell me to check out zen buddhism and then you go and get all chummy with Hay-seus. I've found the best way to deter Jehova's Witnesses...is to answer the door in your underwear. The two that stopped by my house didn't really want to stick around and talk. !@#$%
my mom once got rid of the witnesses by telling them she was one of "The Undead" ..i was an infant at the time, and she claims she was holding me when she said it, and they were horrified.. gyeah, Jesus is okay with me i guess. fuck Religion though. you know whassup. i wish i was going snowboarding this weekend but i didn't wanna sound lame and admit, i really don't have any plans..oh yeah, i might be going to a club on sunday woooo. ...so austin, you look into zen at all? there is zen buddhism, but there is also just plain ol' Zen, which is gonna be even further from 'organized religion' and getting more toward philosophy of life
Guest
I've read so many books on zen it's getting stupid. In fact I'm one of the people who believe that zen 'budhism' is an incorrect term. Most of the main zen ideas started with Taoism and then went into India only to return a few hundred years later as part of budhism. no wonder the people took to this new teaching simply because it was rooted in their old teachings. and for the jehovas.... tell then you were a jehovas witness but you were 'discommunicated'. that means it's against their religious code to even talk to you. Bingo!

SteveAustin
Originally posted by !@#$% ...so austin, you look into zen at all? not yet. I'm planning on grabbing some books on my next trip to the library. I'm a stickler about finishing what I started, so I have a few books remaining. Any recommendations for starters? !@#$%
Shambhala Publishing has a ton of excellent books, and the best part with them, you really get an idea of how inclusive it is...i have Walden and poems by Emily Dickinson published by them, they've also published lots on Tao, and also some Thomas Aquinas christian stuff, also the q'uran, pretty much all faiths, but as their name implies, they are certainly focused on Eastern Philosophy ..it's a great publishing house. http://www.shambhala.com/html/catalog/brow...wse/browse.cfm/ i really got into Buddhism after readin The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche

Guest
ok this is almost a cliche... Zen And The Art of Motorcyle Maitenance I have a feeling that one would really fir your interests SteveAustin. Zen is one of those things that in itself defies description. It's like the shape water takes in a glass pitcher. Oh.. and the paradoxes are everywhere! I just finished 'The Tao In Zen' which is really more about how specific toaist ideas moved around asia. Probably not the best intoduction to it. Actually I'd say that Zen probably isn't the best intro to zen. Too many paradoxes and questions without answers. Try a book on Taoism first like 'Tao-te ching' by Lao-Tzu. It covers many of the concepts in a more traditional fourm that's a better introduction of the concepts. Plus it's very poetic and can be read in an afternoon or over a lifetime. zen article director + are's got it on shambhala books. They bublish a great pocket size.
