Capturing the Friedmans

Recommended Posts

Guest BROWNer

anybody seen this?

http://www.capturingthefriedmans.com/main.html

'bout this dysfunctional dorko family that makes all these super8 home

vids of everything, including the downward spiral of the

home unit. basically dad gets charged with pedeophilia and shit goes

buck from there. sounds rosy i know...

i only had the chance to see it once this weekend, and

i'm a bit confused over what was what, which i suppose is

a good thing on the fair/balanced tip..

anyhow, recommended viewing if you like things beyond

shoot 'em up explosion car chase entertainment.

The lady and I have been on a documentary streak (Stevie and Hell House), so I'm sure we'll check this out. Thanks for the knowledge, Brownzilla.

Oh, and here's the info on Hell House: Hell Houses are a distinctly American phenomenon which began in 1990 just outside of Dallas, at the Trinity Assembly of God Church. The original Hell House was conceived as a modern-day fire-and-brimstone sermon. Today, this religious ceremony of sorts is replete with actors, extensive lighting equipment and full audio-visual tech crews. Inside the Hell House, tour guides dressed as demons take visitors from room to room to view depictions of school massacres, date rape, AIDS-related deaths, fatal drunk driving crashes, and botched abortions. Hell Houses have now spread to hundreds of churches worldwide. With full access to the behind-the-scenes action, HELL HOUSE follows the process from the first script meeting until the last of the 10,000 visitors passes through the Hell House doors. The movie gives a verite window into the whole process of creating this over-the-top sermon, while showing an intimate portrait of the people who fervently believe its message. The film also features a score by Bubba and Matthew Kadane, formerly of the band Bedhead.

in kandahar there is a piece of music that they go back to

throughout the whole flick which rules intensely. i'd rent it again just

for that(and the incredibly beautiful imagery).

i think i've heard of hell house poops, will check it out.

mamerro, i found cane toads, but i haven't rented it yet.

i lose at life.

if i recall, it was pretty short, thus the cost/length ratio

negated rental that particular evening. soon.

yeah, saw the previews for capturing the friedmans. need to rent it. i'm not into sitting in a movie theater with a bunch of strangers and watching awkward shit like that. i'll do it at home where i can stop the movie and wipe off the heebie-jeebies if need be.

i dug it.

i don't know if you know the premise of the movie or not...

a woman, resident of canada but born in afghanistan

returns there to try to save her sister

(who has decided to commit suicide at the last eclipse of the 20th century)

it was clearly made before 9/11

and it is an incredible picture of what life in that place is like..

it made my heart sink.

and of course, as a western woman, learning more about the conditions under a burga was fascinating, but deeply troubling

and it's an Iranian movie.

not western at all.

Have you seen Devil's Playground? If not, scope it out. It's about Amish teens and their struggle to choose between the "english" life and the amish life. Features an AMISH CRYSTAL METH DEALER.
