check out what recovery tols are availale to you.

I know most home user tools are fr when someone erases

something by mistake, as opposed to full on drive failure,

but I know there's a bunch of apps out there that might help.

or just take it to the pros and let them fix what they can beofre you make things worse.

my power supply went out on me,

and It cost me $300. But thats for an Apple.

The data backup/transfer SomethingOrOther

only runs you about $50...but, like I said,

thats for an Apple. It could be less for a PC.

(Im assuming you have a PC.)

i know to back up my drive..

i actually have a seond hard drive that ive been lending to my friend.. that has a back up from a couple of months back..

i was just about to do a new backup today..

i just had to do some stuff on my pc before i transferred my working files onto my mac..

dont get me wrong im definitely kicking myself in the ass.

i know i havent lost everything.. but im wigging..

not wiggering.. but.. wiggin.

like ralph...

its 45 dollars to do a basic evaluation.. theyll phone sometime tomorrow with some answers..

so.. until then im stressing..

and learning to get my leg to bend farther backwards to kick myself in the ass.

partly i think the drive is just badly designed.

the usb and power ports on the back.. arent recessed enough.. and the usb port is loose.. and janky.. since i bought it..

the power adapter plug sparks when i plug it in... since ive gotten it..

its kinda comical.. but its been doing it since i first got it.. and i knew one day itd come back to bite me in the ass.

its an ARCHOS q disk 60gig usb 1 hd

which was originally a backup to my

Western Digital 80 gig firewire hd

but since i was using different computers for a while it became more convinient to use the usb since not all computers have firewire.

so i lent my western digital my old roomate since he needed one till he got his..own..but that was months ago..

i wasnt stressing it.. but.. of course...

MURPHY's FUCKING LAW...

anyways.. dont buy janky external HD's

go for nice sturdy dependable companies like Western Digital.

are you using the same HD to go from your mac to pc?

does the HD still mount, but lag up?

if you can get it to mount on a mac and are running osX..try running a diagnostic with disc utility (applications/utilities/disc utility)

i've lost a firewire HD before (maxtor piece of shit 40 gig)..it sucks...

the usb shit sounds like they used a hard bridge instead of a soft bridge..which is a design flaw..should google the model hardrive you have and see if any articles or people complaining about shit is online anywhre...

the sparking..just ain't right...

never heard of that brand.

I will never use or endorse an external firewire that isn't a LACIE or a MAXTOR.

more so lacie just because they have offices near me and are super

friendly about fixing drives. I know a few people that cleared off their

drive at the end of the waranty time and then just walked in and swaped

it for a brand new drive. easy!

well i would have invested in a lacie drive

but at the time i was purchasing i had recently bought a lacie external cd burner which worked fine at first

then after i moved.. completely cracked out

and cant burn a cd unless i run it at its lowest possible speed..which is a fucking joke of like honestly 1x.. i shit you not..

when that happened my faith in that company dropped for a bit..

so i still think western digital is a solid reliable company.. they build their shit like tanks.

i still think companies should put a little more forethought (thats a word right?) into how external drives work.

and yes i was jumping back and forth between pc and mac.

which at first i had problems with files not saving right and having to make multiples and such in different formats.. but i didnt have a problem with 9.0

10 is when it started fragging.

if compusa doesnt have any answers for me.. then my friend has diskwarrior or something.. the only thing is..

that on the pc.. it recognizes the drive..and has random spurts of processing usage

but wont show the drive when i open up the "my computer" list of drives.. itll just freeze up.. although it shows the drive is connected in the "(un)mounted drives" menu. on the mac.. it just straight doesnt show up..

i was having issues with a firewire drive mouting when i was switching between os9 and osX

you can try hitting apple M in disc utility and forcing it to mount...

or...try rebooting in os9 and seeing if it mounts...

drive problems are frustrating though...

Ive heard of Archos.

My company sells their

products. Not good product.

There are some products that

companies buy in order to

bring in money. They buy it cheap

and sell it cheap...as a way to

bring in customers and money.

That said, DONT EVER buy SiPiX Products....EVER!!

I bought a SiPiX digital camera a while back.

I thought I was all cool when I got it for like $100 (2 megapix)

and the shit broke the first day...*fart noise*

Please referr to the following link about a similar experience I had:

The day I almost murdered the entire fucking universe.

In the end, no recovery app I got my hands on could do the job, so I checked estimates for data recovery... 4 digits bro. Not good. Thankfully a retired member of the board hooked it up for me for basically nothing (two cases of Kirin beer). The data was fine, but the directories were completely shot to shit, and there was minor media damage.

Ever since I've had minor mishaps with both my main drive and my external, but Norton has been able to handle it fine.

After you get your data back:

1) Purchase a HUGE. hdd from Best Buy. Use cash.

2) Switch the serial labels *carefully.* No snags.

3) The fun part: run a magnet all the fuck over the broken one. No chances.

4) Bring back the ruined hdd with the serial sticker from the new one.

4b) USE A FAKE NAME. PLEASE.

5) Get your money back and enjoy a free hard drive for your troubles.

Hardly mate.

I would be happy to discuss the Advantages of a PC vs a Mac (as I have had to work extencively with both) but not here and now and certainly not if your going to let your precious little ego get in the way.

well..

honestly.. yes i do believe theres benefits and pitfalls to both macs and pcs.

theres i book i read relatively recently by neil stephenson

( the author of such cyberpunk classics as...

snow crash. the young ladies illustrated primer and zodiak...)

called

Command Line Interface..

basically a breakdown of the history of computing from the origins till now.

its a relatively short book and is written for the layman ..such as myself.. but a good read nonetheless..

anyways i appreciate the analogy he uses to deal with such debates as.. MAC vs PC.

So.. after 45 dollars a few trips on the train..

IM back home.. my HD according to the diagnostic run on it.. seems completely fine..

i have yet to plug it into my own computer but i had my friend run his own diagnostic at his house.. and only found a few disk write errors.

im quite surprised.

i dont get what happened..

and i dont get how it basically disappeared.

but im glad.

and hopefully by tomorrow or saturday ill have my other harddrive setup and this can sit in my closet as the backup.

alright bitches.. learn from my dumbass MISTAKE..

BACK UP WEEKLY>

IM SAYIN!!!!!!

I too can tell you the advantages and disadvantages

of both from a hands on perspective. Maybe its because

they gave me a shit machine, Idunno. But I dont like the

PC I was given. I have one of those Compaq iPaqs.

about Mac vs. PC, feel free to drop me a line.
