Optimising images

This first section on optimising is going to very vague and general, as I don't know what computer or operating system or photo software you are using. If you are scanning photos or sketches the best rule is to scan at a high resolution (DPI) and save at a low one. This helps the images be good quality. Images for the internet are best if they are small file sizes and small in dimensions so they fit on the screen ok. Files should be much smaller than 100kb (ideally around 40kb) and preferably less than 700 pixels across (that's about 10 inches). Save them as .jpg/.jpeg files as they are the smallest kind. If you get offered options on what type of jpg to save as select medium (or if you have Photoshop select 'save for web').

Hosting images

Now you have a nice reasonably sized jpg file you need to host it somewhere on the internet where we can all see it. There is some attachment space included on 12oz now, or you can use one of the many free or paid hosting sites. Most internet accounts come with some form of webspace that you could use too. Once your picture is uploaded you will likely see an option to get a URL (address) for it, or if you right-click on the photo once it is up and select 'Properties' you will see the URL (address) there. Highlight it and press ctrl & c to copy it.

Posting images

If you used a free or paid internet host when you get to the 12oz compose reply / post page there are the Code Buttons above the large box you type your reply. In the Code Buttons section you will find 'IMG' 'IMG'. Click it and a pop up box pops up with a space for you to enter the image URL. Paste (ctrl & v) the URL of you image in here and click ok.

If it is coming up as a red X, check for any typos in the URL or spaces that shouldn't be there. Check there isn't a comma instead of a dot, check the full http:// is included at the font of the url.

If you are going to add your image as an attachment then under the Post Body secton on the compose message / reply page there is the 'Attachments' section. Click 'Browse' to locate your file on your computer, and a pop upWhen you have found the file you want click it and press 'Open' . The pop up closes and then you have to click 'Add This Attachment' . After that the attachement is listed, but it still isn't in your post yet. To do that click 'Add into post' and it is inserted into your post.

Officer breaks arm chasing graffiti vandals

By Sarah Bell

A POLICEMAN broke his arm while chasing graffiti vandals on a train in Twickenham on Saturday.

The incident happened while officers from the British Transport Police worked at Twickenham station, dealing with the rugby crowds returning from the Barbarians match on December 4.

Two officers on the platform noticed a group of three or four youths on a train coming into the station, who they believed had just been spraying some graffiti, and tried to apprehend them.

While chasing them down the train one of the PCs broke his forearm, after he got it caught between the metal rail and glass pane inside the door of the automatic door trains.

Chief Inspector Rudolph Otter explained: "While he was giving chase he got his arm caught then turned, but his arm didn't. It all happened in an instant, so quickly.

"It was a nasty break to his forearm and he had two metal plates put in during an operation on Sunday.

"He is now recuperating at home."

Unfortunately the youths managed to escape while the injured officer was treated, but police are now examining CCTV and asking for witnesses in the hope that they can be traced.

If you saw anything please contact the BTP on 0800 40 59 40.

They would have been done, but I was on crutches with a hip to ankle plaster cast that was on my leg for 6 weeks.
