Think about this:

The number of physicians in the US is 700,000.

Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year is 120,000.

Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171. (US Dept. of Health & Human Services)

Then think about this:

The number of gun owners in the US is 80,000,000.

The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is 1,500.

The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188.

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors before this gets out of hand.

This is utterly ridiculous. What about that not-so-small category of non-accidental gun deaths per year?

** Just saw wiseguy makes the same point.

This is one of those Internet things

Like those mesaages from some guy who claims to be the brother-in-law of the President of Nigeria who is trying to get $500,000 out of the country and needs your bank account number, LOL. Or somebody who wants you to send a dollar to help abandoned pets, and quotes those sort of "5,000,000 abandoned kittens!" kind of statistics.

Nevertheless, whether there are 10,000 murders a year in the U.S. or not, we have a Constitutional RIGHT (like the right to vote, to free speech, to assembly, free press, freedom of religion, etc.) to own firearms. The Supreme Court says the STATES (not the Feds) have a right to control ownership of firearms by requiring licensing, etc. That puts control of firearms within the control of the citizens of any particular state. So, if the citizens of Massachusetts or New York are okay with licensing firearms, who am I to bicker? So long as they do not attempt to ban ownership altogether, I think they have the authority to regulate them, within reason. We have laws pertaining to voting. We have laws pertaining to "the press"---defamation, broadcast media, slander, etc. We have laws pertaining to assembly--what is lawful, parade permits, "demonstration" permits, etc. So, in my opinion, laws pertaining to firearms are Constitutional, but there are OVER 20,000 LAWS about guns already on the books. We have PLENTY of laws about it. The problem is NOT the 99.9999% of gun owners that obey the law, but the tiny, miniscule percentage that DO NOT obey the laws. In other words, "Guns aren't the problem, CRIMINALS are the problem." And I say, "Lock their sorry thug asses up for LONG periods of time if they commit a violent gun-related crime." Shoot somebody over a dope deal, do a drive-by on somebody's house, kill somebody in an argument over a girl--you will never see the free world again. Go ahead---"Be a thug." IN PRISON. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be free, and normal, and armed with guns.
