what do you think about

i spend a lot of time with my own mind and i'm sure that you all do to, and we each think about many different and varied thoughts everyday and every minute. Although everyone thinks about a variety of topics i'm guessing that some people think more about some thoughts than others. for example

one friend i have will only talk about what's going on in other people's lives, the boys she wants to meet and everyday events in her life.

i have another friend who only wants to talk about politics world events and her views on topics at large.

i personally like to think about and discuss human nature topics vs society influences. granted i'm not a highly read thinker and i do also think about myself and day to day events and planning ahead, but when it comes to having a discussion this is what i am most fervent about.

so my question is what do you spend your time thinking about? do you think about what goes on day to day, do you think about the good of society and current events, are you an abstract universe at large thinker (space, cosmos) are you a religous and spiritual thinker, are you an inventor? i'm know there are a lot more, help me out.

i hope that made sense... please let me know if it didn't.

happy monday.

Damn... a happy Monday... wasn't expecting that. Thanks.

I'm scatterbrained... I suppose I think more spacially than anything else (always did best on those parts of the tests)... and like yourself I'd rather talk about behavior than the going-ons in other's lives or take some radical stance on worldly issues. Ever more than that, people who want to sit and pick apart politics all day bother the shit out of me (unless they're above the age of 40)... to think that there's a field of expertise called 'Political Science' and people who dedicate their whole lives to the going-ons across the planet sort-of shits on just about all political talk I hear. It's like me watching Bill Nye the Science guy and trying to tell people about Bio-Chemistry... it's best left to the experts.

Mostly I guess I think about music, though.

Although it all depends on who I'm with, I usually stick to - what's been going on in their/my live(s). I'll delve into the realm of politics/current events every once in a while, much more so with my girlfriend and those I know will be sympathetic to my beliefs.

**edit - and I ^^ answer the question "what do you talk about" .. not "what do you think about." I think about vaginas and beer.

ube - I'm curious. What do you mean "human nature topics vs society influences?"

i prolly think about myself the most... trying to catch contradictions in my acts and my speech, i'm pretty good for the most part... way ahead of most people anyway. i debate a lot of abstract things w/ myself... the existence of love, the nature of knowledge, how insecurity motivates behavior... lately i've been debating w/ myself the merits and cons of music.... the cons tend to be winning. umm, what else? it comes up a lot whether the way i lead my life will lead me to happiness... so far i don't see why it wouldnt, since i am content; there's only one questionable thing, but i'm working through that slowly, and then there's some other probs that can't be helped that will significantly alter my life.

as for talking w/ homies... once we catch up, it ussually ends up talking about behavior, the intricacies of the concept of family, the existence of love.... 2 years ago it was just complaining about girls... a year a go it was just talking shit about em... i'm over em now, and they rarely come up except for when talking about the concept of love, or if people's lives are leading them to happiness.

i think about everything. the job i have i take books out of a machine and put them into a box. 8 hours a day of this = plenty of thinking. sometimes i think about the jobs im doing. sometimes i think about life, girls, how i hate my job, insecure in the future, shit like that. pretty depressing actually.

every once in a while i think of really odd stuff. we did this book for the deaf once which got me thinking:

How do the deaf learn how to read if they can't sound out words. And what language do they think in if they can't speak.

I can pick up on how people act and are reacting to certain situations. I'm very good at reading people and can base my discussions around how people respond to certain things. For example I was at a club and there was this super fine girl that this guy was talking to. He was talking her ear off about some scientific super intellectual type shit. Although the girl was extremely bright and was understanding what the hell he was talking about I could tell by the way she was looking around at other people and at him that she was completely not wanting to talk about this shit with him at that moment, but he kept going. He eventually paused and looked away for a minute and I stepped up to her and said "Hey how are you doing?....I don't have a damn thing intellegent to say to you right now." She started laughing as I shot a glance at the guy she had been talking to and I ended up spending the rest of the night talking with her about nothing but having fun at the same time.

Thats how I work with people.

26, about 3 years ago i became one of those cats that always rocked a walkman... on top of pretty much having constant music on at the crib.... when i first started rocking it, i noticed how melodramatic it made everything.. almost to the point of comedy. Well, what i also noticed after some time is that it didn't think as much.. i was busy listening to the music instead of actually thinking; and i pretty much walk everywhere, so that's a lot of thinking i'm missing out on, and i'm not sure i like the results. i'm not as introspective anymore, and i'm not sure i enjoy the music as much as if i only rocked it when i felt in the mood to listen to something specific.

however, there are times when having the walkman has helped me out... just getting out of an intense situation and then rocking out to the ODB can be pretty enjoyable... or bumpin "break a bitch neck" when you're sick of all the sluts around you.

but this is kind of off topic.

That's exactly what I thought you were going to say, at least to the affect of it causing you to do less thinking... or at least limiting what you're thinking about.

I've also sorta noted that music is 75% negative... or at least talking about time when things were shitty (sometimes how they eventually got better).. I'm starting to wonder if the, as you put it, melancholy nature of most of the shit I listen to has actually had a strong influence on how I look at shit.

...just typing for the sake of hearing my own keystrokes.

well, then you come to the question of, is it negative cause you're a negative person, or did listening to it make you a negative person? frankly, i don't find it to be that powerful... i too listen to music on the more negative side of things, so i dunno. i guess if you were apositive person, you'd be dancing to the backstreet boys right now. of course, a lot of those pop tracks tend to be about generic "love lost" type stuff that has been around for 100s of years... maybe it's just human nature.

i too am a headphone walker. it strikes me sometimes how much it becomes like a security blanket. when i'm walking around and don't have them on, i'm sometimes really conscious of that fact, and feel strange about it. music affects me pretty strongly though, so when i need that "viagra for the soul" a la brezsny, a great song will get the mojo going more than a good cup of tea.

i think i'm pretty selfish in my thoughts. there was a point in high school, when i actually started to think, that i was all about discussing politics, religion, society, etc. then i realized, i really didn't actively care about a lot of that shit. i took a world religions class my senior year, because i've always been somewhat interested in that area. my teacher was a pretty intelligent guy, but very down to earth. i don't remember how he broke it down completely, but he basically said he felt like a success because he provided for his family, looked out for his children, looked out for the neighbor's kids once in a while, had barbecues on sundays, and enjoyed the game and a beer. it made the most sense out of everything i had heard in high school, and it stuck with me.

now i just think a lot more simply. what drives me, what i'm passionate about, the next project, what i'm going to do with my future, who will i spend that with, and most of all at this time of year...

how much i fuckin love christmas

Well I don't consider music entirely 'that powerful' to the point where if I hear a song it's instantly going to impact who I am... no,no, no. Rather I just think it's subtly influenced my demeanor... because I am by no means at either polar, however, I can't help but be conscious of the fact I've listened to music as long as I can remember and that most of the music that is out there resides hardly above dismal.

As far as the democracy thing goes... yeah, of course everyone has a voice and should be entirely allowed to use it. Fact is, most people when discussing politics are only bullshitting about these things because they impede on their immediate wants (regardless of how well-suited they are for the on-going functioning of the system we seem to despise). The way I see it is if you like to watch football, play football video games, and talk about football in your free time.. get off your ass and play some fucking football. Otherwise you shouldn't be telling Kordel Stewart how he should have ran his play.

human nature like what we were born with, like genetics and how much that influences us versus what society influences us to do, thikn and act.

i have no realy interest in political debates or learning about any of those things, but i love learning about human nature and thinking about it.

like divorce - is it human nature to be serially monogamous or mated for life? how much influence does society have on this and how much is ingrained in our behaviour.

same thing with what kind of music we like, whether girls are equal or what we like to do or what we think about even. all relating to human nature.

Small thoughts:

Sex, graffiti, football and whatever my eyes dwell on.

Big thoughts:

Meaning of life and why there isnt one.

Broken dreams and stuff you wished you had done.

All the stuff you want to do but never will.

im currently comtemplating this...

but dont kid yourself, most of the time im contemplating how bored i am....

From Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space by Carl Sagan, Random House, 1994)

Earth (the dot in the middle) as seen from 3.7 billion miles away by the Voyager 1 spacecraft, on 6/6/1990.

... Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors, so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.

Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

UBE-

The movie version of "The Grinch" really helped me out with this one. Granted I was a little faded when I went to see it, it helped me pick up on the metaphor for the "who's" and the "what's".

Some pople are "who's" and tend to ask themselves things like "who's doing who?" and "who are they supposed to be doing?"

Some people are "what's", and tend to ask themselves "what is doing what?" and "what are they supposed to be doing?".

You should take or read about a personality test if you haven't already. I'm an ENTP, which basically means that my thoughts run the gammet. Everything excites me mentally for the most part, though I have noticed lately that I'm am getting a little bit dissappointed at the amount of "who's" I've been surrounding myself with lately. I'm a Gemini, and haven't had much of an outlet for my introspective/abstract thinking side, which is kind of like suffocating one of the twins.

I do a lot of thinking when I am out just driving around. I zone out to some music and I just look at everything man made around me. I look at all of the buildings, the cranes doing constuction, the piers and docks, the ship yards, and i just think about how much is going on at that moment. How much money is being made and the fortunes that are being lost. I look up at sky scrapers and wonder what is going on up there. Who is making copies at the same time the janitor is cleaning the floor at the same time the Boss is fucking his secretary and no one knows about the other. I think about all the opportunities that are out there and how people just roll on by and dont give them any thought. To busy with their problems that are clouding up their minds that make them too busy to stop and just look around and be amazed at whats really going on.

damn.

i can think about more than one thing at once

or nothing at all when i meditate

i think about a certain someone a lot

and a few activites (like sex and graffiti)

plus fantasy land

and reminiscing..

of course all things academic and political..

but ultimately, for me, a better question would be

"what don't you think about?"

and i'd say damn, i don't know.
