Biotech

seriously.

this is one field that cannot implode..

there will never not be a need for advancements in the care, health and treatment of human beings..

it is also a field that allows research in a virtually unlimited number of topics.

if you are at all interested in psychology, i would pursue that to the fullest, with an emphasis on the SCIENTIFIC side of psychology, not the ARTISTIC (or interpretative/therapeutic)

look into current psychology research topics, and see if any are of interest to you..

AS FAR AS ART...there is no career that will take you away from your art..don't make art a career, you can always make art, you may not always make money from art

i have a B.S. in biochemistry and molecular biology,( i have been in a bunch of art shows)..i am considering a move soon, i am not having ANY problems locating a job.

To misquote an old Talking Heads song...

So think about this little scene; apply it to you life.

If your work isn’t what you love, then something isn’t right.

Just look at bob and judy; they’re happy as can be,

Inventing situations, putting them on t.v.

There's another old saying that's something like

"If you love what you do then you will never have to work a day in your life"

because it will never feel like work

As for me...

I'm a video editor and I'm on staff at an editing house so

the projects come to me. Plus I look after the systems and

do a lot of wrangling with various projects. It's not perfect, but nothing is.

I do get to set my own schedule, come into work for noon, have a creative

outlet, get my cell phone paid for, and surf 12oz all day.

Dream job... about as close as I'd ever expect to have.

so I'll put my advice in the next post.

Part 2

My tip for finding a career if you're not in a big metro with jobs like mine...

Consider the Baby Boom!

The population is getting older and things like Health Care,

Estate Planning and even Funeral Services are only going to grow.

If you want job security, get into something like dental work or

nursing. You'll get a nice 9-5 with benefits and you'll still have time

to live your life and do your art. The problem with most 'new media'

or artistic jobs is that it will consume your creativity and all your best

ideas will become the client's 'best ideas'.

If I was to start all over I'd go about as far from computers as possible.

I mean I'd love to be a leathersmith or a cabinet maker. Something that

is independent from computers (or even electricity).

If travel is a big thing for you than look into a career that gives you

mobility. I was very serious about doing hotel management for a while.

Once you learn the trade you can work anywhere in the world. The

Baby Boom is retiring pretty soon and I think tourism will rise. Sure

some areas are hurting right now (sars, bombs and plagues) but

many places will continue to get lots of bookings.

Just dont go signing up to be a caretaker for an old hotel in the mountains.

I strongly disagree with that. I understand that art is

harder on getting money in the pocket but still, it takes

devotion and full focus to do it.

Careers can turn art into a hobby

To clarify this...i envy both those kids for making money out of something they love so much. With 'unpromising' i meant that even

they would never imagined a career out of those two 'professions'

but it happened

well, that was not at all how it worked for me.

my art may take 'full focus' but my career doesn't take any of that focus away.

sure, careers can turn art into a hobby, but i chose my words carefully..

you MAY not make money from art

you can always make art (i didn't say it would be the best or the worst art)

plus, my career, as other careers, influence my art

Art Careers [in my opinion] are more like curator, teacher, jewelry designer, graphic artist or advertising executive

i'm still looking at art from a Fine Artists point of view....so of course i would say, do not become an artist as a career because i would be thinking of myself, a painter, getting backed into a corner where i had to get a job as an ad exec just to survive (which is what TWO of my very talented relatives had to do after over TEN YEARS of looking for a fine art job that utilized their $75,000 degree)

rant over.

go science.

fuck art.

let's kill.

I think there's a big future in vices.

Look at all the things that used to run the world economy...

 • Tobacco, Diamonds, Spices, Slaves, Plundered Gold, Fur, Opium etc...

They've all gone out of fashion.

Well now there's a new line of vice commodities

 • Porn, Drugs, Booze, Coffee, Prostitution, Tomacco etc...

Find a way to make money (legally) off any of these products and you'll be set.

(and keep at the art with all your spare time)

seriously kilo

do not think that prostitution, porn, drugs, booze or tobacco were ever not in 'fashion' or at least tied, inexorably, with popular conciousness

these are certainly not new things

last i heard, prostitution was the world's OLDEST profession

and fools still love their wack ass conflict diamonds

ok.. point taken.

I guess my point would have been clearer if I said...

Get into things that people want (like the above listed)

because you'll be making so much more than say... a flower shop.

and we know pimping was the second oldest profession

(but back then I'm sure all the pimps were women)

Okay. I feel better now so I think i will give some input to this thread. There are lots of jobs that will pay you very well without any kind of college degree. As long as you can talk to people and make them feel like you care about them a job in sales might be up your alley. I had a friend that sold Tombstones and monuments to survivors of people. They had a list of survivors that they called and the conversation went something like this. "Hello Mrs. Jones? This is ___ from tombstones are us. I would like to say that I am very sorry about your recent loss and i know that you want to get this behind you as soon as possible during this trying time." There you have it. By making it seem like you really care about the dead person and the feelings of the survivor, you have just sold a tombstone.

Now if you really don't give a shit about people at all and what kind of financial bind you put them in then i would suggest a job as a car salesman. I did that for a little while and made retarded amounts of money. I sold a $12,000 car to an 18 year old girl for $450 a month for 6 years. I had her sign a contract for $400 a month and she left without taking the car or her copy of the contract. Well I got a fax from a bank that would let me stick this young lady for an extra $50 a month so I called her back and told her that i accidentally had her sign some one elses contract. So she came back and signed the new one and gave me even more money. Some people would call that "Morally Irrehensible". Me? I like to think of it as one of those life learning lessons that everyone has to go through.

If you really dont like to work for other people and have them breathing down your neck you can sell steak in airtight packs out of the back of a truck to random people on the street. I did that for a while and brought in close to $700 a week, tax free, working from Mon-Friday.

And there you have it. College isnt always the answer. You can do it.

nice story mr. yuck.... you asshole!

just kidding.

I think the theme is quite consistant here...

It's all about the hustle and applying yourself to what you do.
