Recommended Posts

I dunno where I heard it, but it's something along the lines of-

"The rumors sorrounding my death have been greatly exagerated"

Maybe it's not even a real quote, but I KNOW I picked it up somewhere.

Thanks dudes.

seeking is correct.

I believe it has been quoted in a movie not too long ago. The name escapes me at the moment.

Love Mark Twain

And I've read his novels and some of his stories several times. "Tom Sawyer" is widely recognized as one of the greatest American novels, but it must be read with an eye open to the fact that it reflects a period of history long past. It was, in it's day, radical in it's social commentary, and Tom Sawyer's internal moral struggle about whether or not to "turn Jim in" reflected the nation's very real conflict about issues of slavery and state's rights. Twain was a brilliant man and a great humorist, but led a rather low-key personal life. He did not really seek celebrity, odd today, but not unusual in that time.

He came from a nearly-impoverished background, and worked at a wide variety of jobs (the most famous of which was crewing on a steamboat) before beginning his writing career. He also worked as a blacksmith, and some other trades. He was a Southerner, and served in the Confederate Army, but his sympathies lay with the plight of the recently emancipated freedmen.
