boxcarwilly
as for ian mackaye, me being a little hardline fuck shouldnt be defending him, but knowing his reasoning behind his sellout makes it a little defendable to those who dont know. ian ran the term sxe until he was creatively shot. he couldnt go with it anymore, being weak and having pushed his envelope he started getting loose on the drug tip. do i care, a little to see a fallen idol (but thats what they all do thats their purpose), do i appreciate his honesty in reasoning of course. it was a creative decision, ians life is music, he decided he could do it better with the use of substances and you know what.... embrace that is the only answer you need. oh wait need another one fugazi. think of him if he kept playing minor threat shit it would suck look at what happened to earth crisis they went from a godsend to fucking nin in 10 yrs. but they hold their values, so the question arises what is more important your values or your happiness. i would paint a fuck of a lot looser if i decided to pound some wild turkey, shit i might even be good enough then to make some money, but i realize that i dont need money, i need my heart and my fingers. so i work with what my values allow me to. but believe me if someone walked up to me and said you want to paint in the new graffiti related gap commercial i would jump, get paid to paint and write jealousy on the goddamn screen because that is all the reason i need to make several grand for doing something i love jobeone sellout to everything. I think the kids talking about "selling out" are definitely under 21. who wants to bet? Hip hop is worldwide and mainstream. don't you know that by now. at least they are using real dj's and not actors. so at least it's authentic...... Fuck you and fuck the Gap. just scratch. It all boils down to 4 drunken idiots laughing their asses off at the one poor inebriated fuck trying to fight a fish the size of a Buick. mental invalid
um willy my ian suggestion had more to do with him not selling out to mainstream, and not about doing drugs...i dont think he has sold out...im just talking about fugazi never ditching their label, charging 5 bucks for shows, not doing spots or sponsorships, etc...and i really use them as an example cause the window was there for them to jump out of, but they didnt commit artistic suicide...and why should he stay with minor threat create music that 'sucks'? where does the integrity lie in that? expand and evolve, by whatever means....and dont you think youre giving a little to much credit to the drugs?...cause i know a whole ot of bands that do drugs and dont do drugs, and id say most cant even fuck with fugazi....as far as the whole sXe, i could could really give two shits if i band does or doesnt, why cause i dont give two shits if someone does or doesnt...note please undertand im not talking about the junkie or crackhead....but anyway i hope i never see you in a gap ad, no disrespect to you, but it be one more nail in a commercial corporate coffin...r. boxcarwilly
i was being positive on the ian not being sxe tip which is unlike me. their music has improved, and unlike every sxe kid in the world i have never listened to the entire minor threat cd i dont ever want to ill stick to embrace and fugazi. as for the nail in the corp coffin, if you dont like capitalism fuck it, it is American society that begs everything be made into a capitalist endeavor, there are ways to buck the system, get over on it, get under it, smash it, some of this can be done on a daily basis, stealing, graffiti on buildings, etc. but when a personal endeavor comes along to capitalize on your self why go hungry, why not eat out at vegan restaurants everynite supporting good business ventures then having to buy fucking minute rice with canned tomatoes. i just think if the chance comes to get paid for doing something you love jump on it. if you dont you are in essence limiting what you love. not to say that my girlfriend and i should capitalize on porn but that is to say that art is meant to be exploited in fact that is how one gets coverage. shepard fairey for example blew shit up and now he is up on peoples fuckin underwear how over is that. he is a king a worldwide king, he has people everywhere wearing him, did he capitalize or just blow up for fame, knowing shep he did it for fame. the money helps but he knows that 100000 people are wearing him. do what you gotta do. by any means necessary.
