Exclusive Music Marathons

Recommended Posts

So anyone else ever take Exclusive Music Marathons (or EMM for short) ??

You know when you commit your ears to one artist for a set amount

of time and you refuse to listen to anything else untill you think you

reach some profound understanding of the artist over their many albums?

I've done this a few times in the past with Tribe, Mark Farina, Gigolo Records, dub riddims.... infin.

So the current marathon I've started on...

So Untill next Monday the only music I will bump from my set will be one of these...

i know several people who have been on an outkast tear the last few months. interesting. i certainly can count myself among the ranks... speakerboxxx is on constant in the whip right now. i love driving to "the way you move..." haha.

anyway.

i do EMMs all the time. really it's the way to learn the music best, and furthermore when you really do it up, albums serve as milemarkers in your life; i love the autobiographical element to the whole thing.

there are too many to list, but serious obsessions occurred with:

albert ayler

anthony braxton

ATCQ in the little days

lee perry

scientist

johnny osbourne

prince paul productionsz

countless others

I guess it's just that I was sleeping on outkast a bit in the past

and now it's time to make up for it. Remeber when we were young

and you'd get a new cassette and it would be in the walkman for

weeks before you'd change it. And if it was a mix tape and you heard

one of the songs elsewhere it would feel out of context. I miss that.

I just made it throught aquameni and I'm wondering which is next.

have you already gone throught them all once? i'm figuring you'd have to do it in order of release date the first time through.

tapes are the shit

i love tapes.

love them.

i know what you mean.

or when you hear a song on an album that you know from a great mixtape and start hearing the next song before it ends...

i killed tapes when i was little. it made me know the whole album, because i just listened, i didn't skim. i wasn't TRYING to waste my precious walkman batteries yo.

my MO is still records & tapes.

I'm on southernplayalisticadillacmuzik at the moment.

Tapes were great because they were linear.

You didn't skip around the same way. No skipping intros,

no playing repeat unless you flip the tape and fast forward.

(for those of us on really crap walkmen that only had play/stop/cue)

I've only done this with the two artists I have the complete discography of: U2 and Panacea. Squarepusher also to some extent, but I only have 5 albums. It really does give you a weird sense of understanding the music on another level.

Can't say I share the love of tapes, ever since the first time I used a tape player I was outraged by the fact I couldn't skip songs. But I definitely agree with the feeling of mixtapes and how after enough listening the singles start feeling out of context elsewhere.

Guest im not witty

most definitely. what happens even more is that i have a marathon of the same CD over and over, for loooooooong time. sometimes i just get emmersed into an album.

right now its . KINGS OF LEON. i cannot thank PMB enough for suggesting this band, got that cd today and i can tell it wont be leaving the player for a while. unfortunate cause i just got that new outkast too.

but yea, fans of rock, i cannot stress enough that kings of leon are some funky down home brothers..and they are literally brothers too. the family that drinks whisky and rocks together, stays together.

check www.dub.com for some great links (and streaming)

back to the outcast....

I've been listening to nothing but Outkast for about a day now.

The discman on the ride to work was Speakerboxx and the radio

in the bathroom this morning was Stankonia. And the best one...

Last night I played 'the love below' while getting heated with this girl

and it just fit perfectly! Thank you Andre!

and I'm spent.

So I went full on outkast untill mid day sunday when I made my roomate

a mixed cd. You can bet there were a few outkast tracks on that disc!

My only regret of this whole experience....

The song stuck in my head is 'Valentine's Day' on the Andre disc.

I mean it's really stuck in there. And when did Andre decide he was

the new Bootsy Collins?
