A good tool is clay, you can shape that shit fairly easily throw a light on it and you got yourself a really good reference. I'm not saying to build anything mostly just look around you at simple shapes in common everyday objects like bottles, books, xbox controller, whatever. . . I like the flow of it, but it does bleed and is hard to control at times. $1,000 is a lot of money.
