Smart Posted September 7, 2003 Share Posted September 7, 2003 RIP Mokey Dancin' Dude... that funky monkey Bali Dancer Known for Monkey Dance Dies The Associated Press JAKARTA, Indonesia Wayan Limbak, a Balinese dancer who helped create the island's famous Monkey Dance, has died, a news report said Sunday. He was 106. Working with German painter Walter Spies in the 1930s, Limbak adopted a traditional exorcism ritual to invent the dance, known in Indonesian as Kecak. The dance features a chorus of bare-chested men making monkey sounds. It is popular with tourists visiting Bali, part of the Indonesian archipelago. Limbak died Friday of a suspected stroke at a hospital in Gianyar on Bali, the Jakarta Post said. He was to be cremated Monday, it said. Limbak helped popularize Kecak and shape Bali's image as an exotic cultural paradise by taking his dance troupe to several international festivals.
