Train operator First Great Western is offering a £**** reward after vandals threatened staff and ruined train carriages. There have been a number of incidents ************ in recent weeks with the latest happening last ********day.

British Transport Police is stepping up patrols in response to the incidents.

The police say one member of staff has been threatened with a knife and one train carriage window appears to have been shot with a gun of some kind.

It is thought the people responsible want spray their 'tags' on the trains, the graffiti equivalent of a calling card.

Adrian Ruck, spokesman for First Great Western, said: "We are working with the British Transport Police to apprehend those responsible.

"There will be initiatives - more night-time police patrols. We are urging our staff to be extremely vigilant and report any trespassers and suspicious events to our control centre who will dispatch the police."

First Great Western said tagging was dangerous for those who did it as railway lines were potentially hazardous places.

Mr Ruck said: "There was an incident *******day, March **, but there have been more over the last couple of weeks, *********************.

"Two of our train drivers were involved in incidents ******* ******

"During these incidents on the train we had a window broken and the outside was "tagged" - when they paint their initials on the outside of the train.

"We are not going to have our staff put at risk from these sort of activities.

"Vandalising of trains also leads to a service problem - they have to be taken out of service, so there can be a shortfall of services and then cancellations.

"It can be unpleasant and dangerous for staff, and dangerous for taggers as well, putting our staff in danger and disrupting train services across the region.

"We have spare carriages, but they are putting some out of service. We are determined to clamp down on this, so we are offering a £* reward for information leading to the conviction of these vandals."
