I think we should have shot them all, but apparently we're putting them on the payroll instead. Whatever. I suspect that we will eventually run out of thugs to shoot in Iraq and things will calm down. Then once they have a government that doesn't need to rely upon torture and murder to maintain power, we can get the fuck out of there and leave them to their own devices once again. No doubt they will quickly revert to type and another authoritarian creep will be running Iraq as an extension of the Secret Police. That seems to be what the people of Iraq are used to. They have enough guns and ammunition now to guarantee democracy, but they have virtually no experience in normal civility. What they ought to do is shoot all the Baath Party motherfuckers deader than a canned mackeral and start over, but I doubt they'll do that. Most likely the lower-level Baath Party guys will worm their way back into positions of authority, just like the Nazis after World War II. As long as the people of Iraq are armed, and willing to defend themselves, they at least have a hope of liberty. But if the occupation forces or the government of Iraq ever succeed in disarming them completely, like Sugar Britches Australia and UK, they are fucked. They will never be free again.
