old but still good...

(North Carolina, 1987) Ivan, an experienced parachutist with 800 jumps under his belt, was videotaping a private lesson given by an instructor for a single trainee. He had attached the video camera to his helmet so that it would capture the entire day of instruction, and the supporting power supply and recorder were in a heavy satchel slung on his back.

The group went up in the plane, and the instructor led the enthusiastic beginner through preparations for the jump. Ivan carefully documented the lesson, which needed to be perfect for the sake of posterity,

When they reached the jump site, Ivan jumped from the back of the plane and filmed the student and instructor jumping from the front of the plane. A few heartbeats later, tape still running, Ivan realized that he had been so focused on filming the jump that he had forgotten to strap on his own parachute. An FAA spokesperson said that the video equipment strapped to his back may have been mistaken for a parachute.

In the footage salvaged from the camera and spliced together, the student and instructor are shown in freefall befire they pull their ripcords and recede rapidly from view. Then the cameraman's hands reach for his own ripcord. When Ivan realizes he has no ripcord, ergo no chute, his hands are seen to flail about wildly, then the camera pans down towards the approaching earth...

Film from the final stage of the plunge was destroyed on impact.

A week before that, in West Hempstead, N.Y., taxicab passenger Kenneth Hill, 39, died after the driver hit him with a tire iron; he had been chased by the driver after he tried to skip out on a $5 fare and continued to taunt the driver, saying, "I'm not going to pay you, and there is nothing you can do about it."

Hahahaha.....I knew a kid who did this. But instead of getting killed, he just got the absolute shit kicked out of him. He then threw money at the driver in a bloody daze, later finding out he'd given him about $80....

Whale flatulence stuns scientists

By Simon Benson

August 14, 2003

IT'S one of the unfortunate consequences of being a mammal - flatulence.

Pardon me ... a large bubble behind a whale in the icy waters of Antartica.

And, more unfortunately for a group of whale researchers, nature took its course right under their noses - literally.

The researchers claim this is the first photograph of a minke whale letting one go in the icy waters of Antarctica. It was taken from the bow of a research vessel.

"We got away from the bow of the ship very quickly ... it does stink," said Nick Gales, a research scientist from the Australian Antarctic Division.

However, the episode did not detract from their mission, which was to collect DNA from whale dung and attach satellite tracking devices in the first research of its kind to track where the creatures go and what and how much they eat.

Already some incredible stories about whales are emerging.

One pigmy blue whale wearing a satellite tracking tag was found to be returning to a former population off southern Australia which was thought to have been hunted to extinction by Russian whalers.

"Every piece of this research is surprising," said Dr Gales.

"Some is confirming what we thought. We know a lot about humpbacks, but we don't know anything about where they are going.

"Internationally there is a big push ... saying there are now too many whales eating too many fish and so we have to kill them.

"It's important that we determine what impact whales actually have on a fishery such as krill ... and how that fishery interacts with the whale."

(23 September 2002, Brazil) A farm keeper from São Paulo decided to remove a beehive from his orange tree. He didn't know exactly how to proceed, but he knew the hive should be burned, and he knew bees sting. So he protected his head with a plastic bag sealed tightly around his neck, grabbed a torch, and went off to fight the bees.

His worried wife went to look for him a few hours later, and found him dead. However, it wasn't the bees that killed him. The plastic bag had protected him from smoke, stingers, and... oxygen! He had forgotten to put breathing holes in the bag.

61 year old American World War II plane, found in China

A P-40 fighter plane, of The Flying Tiger Fleet, has crashed in to Dianchi Lake in Southwest China's Yunnan Province, in April 28, 1942 during a training exercise. The body of the pilot was recovered soon after.

The Flying Tiger Fleet are made up of volunteer American pilots, and the missions of these planes are to transport supplies, and help the Chinese army to fight Japanese invaders during WWII.

After a careful mission to again locate the plane, it was found lying 5 meters beneath the surface in the northern part of the lake. It is believe that it will take 30-45 days to unearth the once glorious fighter.

US to Display Pictures of Female Saddam

The US army is to place posters of the ousted dictator, Saddam Hussein, dressed as various celebrities in his hometown, Tikrit.

Saddam's name is changed to "Zsa Zsa Hussein" after movie legend legend Zsa Zsa Gabor.

The posters include manipulated pictures of Saddam morphed with; Billy Idol, Elvis Presley, Rita Sayworth and others. The purpose of these posters is to boost US troops morales, and to ridicule anyone loyal to Saddam.

A side purpose is to reveal the identities of any still loyal to Saddam: "The bad guys are going to be upset, which will just make it easier for us to know who they are.", says Lt. Col. Steve Russell. Others fear the posters will provoke the Iraqis.

heres some more.

On May 25 in the town of Baqubah, Iraq, Ms. Iman Salih Mutlak, 22, was gunned down by U.S. soldiers, who said she relentlessly charged at them, despite orders to halt, intending to explode the 10 grenades she was carrying. While some Iraqis treated her as a courageous martyr, her family in Zaqaniyah, Iraq, was disgusted with her, not because they are pro-American, but because she shamed them by leaving home without permission. Said her father, to an Associated Press reporter in May, "Had she returned home, I would have killed her myself and drunk her blood." [Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle-AP, 5-31-03]

Tyrone Henry, 30, appeared here in 2000 when arrested in Tucson, Ariz., for running a scheme in which female college students were paid $10 to "test" facial cream but which cream turned out to be Henry's sperm. He was convicted of fraud and sentenced to seven years in prison, but is still (according to a June 2003 Tucson Weekly story) aggressively proclaiming that he violated no law. Argues Henry: The women were adults; there was no sexual contact; they were paid; Henry did not "expose" himself because the girls were blindfolded. Henry said he was just pursuing "the American dream" with his Web site selling men photos of women's sperm-adorned faces. [Tucson Weekly, 6-5-03]

Becky Nyang, 26, was hospitalized while on holiday after being struck by lightning, attracted to her face by her tongue stud, leaving her with severe blisters about the mouth, face and feet (Corfu island, Greece).

Mongolian sumo champion Asashoryu was disqualified during the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament when he inexplicably pulled a World Wrestling Entertainment move and took down his opponent by yanking his hair (Nagoya, Japan).

And a 4-year-old girl was hit by a computer that came flying out of a 12th floor apartment window, flung by a father angry that his 12-year-old daughter wouldn't stay off the Internet (Seoul). [bBC News, 7-5-03] [st. Petersburg Times-AP, 7-12-03] [Reuters, 7-7-03]

Teen Dies After Prized Fish Stuck in Throat

Tue August 19, 2003 10:51 AM ET

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A Cambodian teenager died of suffocation after a fish he caught jumped out of his hands and lodged in his throat, newspapers reported on Tuesday.

Lim Vanthan, 17, and his family were planting rice at the weekend near their home on the outskirts of the impoverished Southeast Asian nation's capital, when they decided to go for a swim.

During his dip, Lim Vanthan caught a prized eight-inch fish, called kantrob in Cambodian, with his hands.

But the high school student's excitement was short-lived when his catch squirmed out of his hands and jumped into his mouth, where it became stuck because of barbs running down its back.

He died of suffocation before he could receive treatment at a local clinic, the newspapers said.

"This is an accident, but it shows we must all be careful," concluded the Khmer-language Rasmei Kampuchea (Light of Cambodia) newspaper. "Accidents can happen at any time."

change of pace

For all you right brain left brain people out there...

try this

While sitting at your desk make clockwise circles with your right foot.

While doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.

What direction is your foot going?

He strips, then gets hit - by train

MONROE, Wash.

A 24-year-old man who led Snohomish County sheriff's deputies on a bizarre chase through the Evergreen State Fair on was seriously hurt when he tried to jump aboard a moving train.

The man, a fair employee, was seen on the midway Tuesday smoking "an unknown narcotic" from a glass pipe, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said. He was fired on the spot.

The man attempted to steal money from another carnival worker, then went to a women's restroom, where he exposed himself, Jorgensen said.

When deputies arrived, the man put on his pants, took off his shirt, and fled through a window in one of the restroom's stalls.

He groped women as he ran, then scaled a chain-link fence to U.S. 2, where he attempted to steal a car from a woman.

When that failed, he ran across the highway to a train and tried to jump aboard, even though it was traveling about 45 miles per hour, Jorgensen said.

He was knocked back by the train, and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with multiple fractures. He was reported in serious condition Tuesday night.

When he's released, Jorgensen said, he'll likely be charged with indecent liberties and attempted robbery.

Man laughs to death in sleep

Associated Press Thursday, August 21, 2003

BANGKOK, Thailand -- An ice-cream truck driver in Thailand died while laughing in his sleep, a newspaper reported Thursday.

Damnoen Saen-um, 52, laughed for about two minutes on Wednesday and then stopped breathing, The Nation said, quoting officials.

The newspaper said Damnoen's wife tried to wake him up but he kept laughing. An autopsy suggested that he might have had a heart attack, The Nation quoted a doctor as saying.

"I have never seen a case like this. But it is possible that a person could have heart seizure while laughing or crying too hard in their sleep," said Dr. Somchai Chakrabhand, deputy director-general of the Mental Health Department, according to The Nation.

The incident occurred in Phrae province, 300 miles north of Bangkok.

Man on motorized bar stool pulled over

Associated Press Thursday, August 14, 2003

RENO, Nev. -- Police pulled over a man on a bar stool -- after a slow-speed pursuit on one of Reno's busier streets.

It started Monday when an officer saw a man riding the motorized bar stool at 35 mph. He was being followed closely by a woman in a Mustang.

Both driver and rider were pulled over.

The woman told police she had been on the phone with a dispatcher reporting the bar stool stolen.

The owner of the bar stool confirmed that the stool, powered by a small engine, had been taken three weeks earlier.

Jarrett Orcutt, 22, said he had bought it a little over a week ago, thinking it was a toy and added that he had driven it between Reno and nearby Sparks several times. Police estimate its value at more than $1,000.

Orcutt faces Reno charges of possession of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia and numerous traffic violations.

Sparks police are handling the stolen vehicle report.

Man survives horrific construction accident

This x-ray shows the drill that went through Ron Hunt's head.

Courtesy x-ray

By Scott Hess

Truckee resident Ron Hunt, who has been dubbed "Miracle Man" by friends, survived being impaled through the eye with an 18-inch long, 1 1/2-inch diameter chip auger drill bit.

While using a drill above his head on Aug. 15, the six-foot ladder he was standing on started to wobble, Hunt's nephew Ben Hunt said. "The ladder started to 'walk' on him," Ben said. "He lost his balance and threw the drill down - which is normal for us (construction workers)."

Then, he fell off the ladder face-first and onto the drill, which went through his right eye and out his skull, just above his right ear. According to Ben, doctors told him the drill pushed his brain aside, rather than impaling it, which could have caused further - and most likely vastly more extensive - damage.

Ron was airlifted by Care Flight to Washoe Medical Center in Reno, where Ben and his father (Ron's brother) Chris met him in the emergency room.

"The nurses braced us for it before we saw him," Ben said. "It didn't seem real - it seemed like a movie. I wasn't sure what to feel."

Ben said at that point the nurses had cleaned him up, but the drill was still in. Still, Ben said his uncle was doing better than he expected. "He was talking, telling jokes," he said. "It didn't seem possible for him to be alive, seeing him with a drill bit through his head."

Corrin Keck, a friend of Ron's, said other than loss of sight in his right eye, she has not seen any major effects. "At this point, we haven't noticed any problems with his motor skills and speech." She did say that he, obviously, is in some pain, but he is dealing with it.

In addition, Ben said he has suffered "a little bit of nerve damage in his face - his smile is a little different on that side."

Ron was in surgery again Monday, getting titanium plates put in underneath his eye and on the side of his head, Keck said.

The hardest part, she said, is he was not insured for the job he was performing. According to Ben, he did have insurance, but for this particular job he was listed as a sub-contractor, and was not covered under his insurance.

Keck has begun to organize fund-raisers for his hospital bills, which are already starting to accumulate. She said he already has a bill from Care Flight and the medical procedures he has gone through. Keck said she does not know how much the bills will amount to, but she hopes to simply help out.

In addition to fund-raisers, Keck set up the "Ron Hunt Medical Fund" at Bank of the West. Donations to the Ron Hunt Medical Fund may be made at any Bank of the West.

Although the loss of sight and nerve damage is not to be taken lightly, Ron's family and friends are looking on the bright side. Ben said the accident could have been much worse - anywhere from major brain damage to death - so everyone is very thankful he didn't suffer more damage.

He will get a glass eye, Ben said, and half-joked, "He'll just have a lazy eye."

"You don't get that many chances in life," Ben said. He said he and Ron's family and friends were thankful he did not suffer worse and he thanked "all the people who called and for their prayers."

He added, "Care Flight did really well - they got him down to the hospital real quickly. One of the Care Flight nurses came in later to see how he was...she showed some real care for him."

For the future, Ben said Ron had not said if he was going to return to work or not. "At first we didn't think he'd ever work again. He's thankful for his second chance," Ben said.

Ben did say, however, that Ron is using this as a positive experience. "It's just going to be one of those stories," Ben said. "He'll joke around with his glass eye and pop it out..."
