Inside Out was a hardcore band from Orange County, California. In their brief existence they released one 7", 1990?s No Spiritual Surrender (Revelation #19). The band played many shows, and even toured the east coast once before breaking up in 1991. Material had been written for a second release, which was to be titled Rage Against the Machine.

Seeing Inside Out live was a memorable experience for most. Not only did the band play with an incredible amount of energy, but Zack would also speak his mind and explain the messages behind the songs. Sean, from the Rev hardcore band By A Thread, says they were the best show he ever saw and the best he ever will see. There are still many bootlegs available of the band playing live.

Inside Out broke up a while after their guitarist, Vic Dicara, left the band to become a Hare Krishna monk. The group went through a number of line-up changes before finally calling it quits. Despite Zack?s efforts to keep things afloat, the chemistry was lost.

Some other members from throughout the band's lifetime include Sterling Wilson, Alex Barretto, and Mike Rosas.

efore fronting Inside Out, Zack de la Rocha had played guitar in Hardstance, a straight-edge band. He was also the guitarist in an early incarnation of Farside, playing between stints with Inside Out. In 1992 he hooked up with Tom Morello to become the current vocalist for Rage Against The Machine.

Vic Dicara also played in the groups 108 and Shelter. He became extremely involved with Hare Krishna, which he now has mixed feelings about. He continues to study and teach Sanskrit philosophy, and is currently writing music which he plans to perform and release sometime soon.

Mark Hayworth had been playing with Gorilla Biscuits before he replaced Sterling Wilson as Inside Out?s full-time bassist. After the group broke up he joined the political band State of the Nation. He now works with Rebel Waltz, Inc., Rancid?s management company.

Chris Bratton was also the drummer for Chain of Strength. He has made appearances drumming on an L7 album, and in the band Lyme.

zack de la rocha - vocals

vic dicara - guitar

mark hayworth - bass

chris bratton - drums

Burning Fight

I'll reach out my hand and you'll turn the other way.

I'm only trying to extend myself, to communicate.

I try and I try and I try, there's no response from you.

So now I refuse to waste my, waste my time, to waste my fucking time on you.

I refuse to let myself down by falsely putting judgement on you.

To make myself look higher, higher - only to be knocked down by the truth.

I will never choose a different path; I will never turn away from you.

Your attitude is an example of this, which has become for me a Burning Fight.

Not to change your opinion of me; but to try to help you see what's right.

And I will never choose a different path; ya I will never turn away from you.

I will never choose a different path; and I will never fucking be like you!

Ya, it's my Burning Fight, my Burning Fight.

This is my Burning Fight, my Burning Fight.

Undertone

We can't separate. We cannot cut the cord.

We can't deny to relate. More ignorance we can't afford.

We cannot quiet the Truth. We can't quiet the Undertone.

So eager to claim we could never be the same - can't quiet the Undertone.

A stale superstition puts compassion in remission - can't quiet the Undertone. back to the top

By A Thread

Holding on, for my life.

Hanging on, By A Thread.

Cause I if I don't try, I'm gonna fall into the hatred of this world.

And If I don't try I'm gonna fall, I'm gonna fall...

My hands are bleeding, this thread cuts through my veins;

But it's all I've got to hold.

I hang and pray and struggle everyday,

To keep this spark of reality from growing cold.

And If I don't try I'm gonna fall, I'm gonna fall...

A tightrope balance; my very life,

hangs By A Thread above the abyss of my despair.

If I lose my grip again, oh if I snap.

I will be lost again - a dark relapse. back to the top

No Spiritual Surrender

Try to make me bow down to you.

Try to take my identity.

Try to make me just another pebble on the beach.

A green mind twists the plan.

A cold hand trying to silence me.

You reach out to grasp me, but I'm out of reach.

No Spiritual Surrender

No Spiritual Surrender

Try to make me bow down to you.

Try to take my identity.

Try to make me just another pebble on the beach.

A green mind twists the plan.

A cold hand trying to silence me.

Trying to grasp me, but I'm out of reach.

No Spiritual Surrender

No Spiritual Surrender back to the top

Sacrifice

I gave, I gave, you indulged yourself and robbed from my good will.

If not you who can I trust? Who can I trust to be fulfilled?

Sacrifice.

I've done more than my share.

I kept you from drowning when I couldn't swim.

Now I'm sinking and you're not there.

You're not there.

You're not there.

You're not there.

So now I choke on every word that I said to your pretty face.

Like when I said that no one better, no one better could take your place.

Betrayal - lies: Lies thick in the air.

And should the bottom fall out on your life you'll turn around and I'm not there.

I'm not there.

I'm not there.

I'm not there.

Don't waste your time insulting me, I'd do anything.

You take and you take then you just give it away.

So how can I give any more?

There will be no more - there will be no more sacrifice. back to the top

Redemption

Lost at a game, so easy to play.

I lost my faith, I lost my stride.

How can this be, I fought so desperately.

Was too afraid to show what I had inside.

But I believe in redemption.

And I believe in redemption.

And I believe in redemption.

Children of the street wander so helplessly.

Who will pay for their suffering?

We've got the power to set them free,

Yet still, we do nothing, nothing.

But I believe in redemption.

And I believe in redemption.

And I believe in redemption.

I believe!

Sometimes I just don't know, I guess we lost our way to go.

Sometimes I just don't know, I guess we lost our way to go.

Sometimes I just don't know, I guess we lost our way to go.

Sometimes I just don't know, I guess we lost our way to go. (x2)

Redemption!

"Inside Out was the first band I ever fronted. I channeled all my pain through that band. It was about completely detaching ourselves from society to see ourselves as... as spirits, and not bowing down to a system that sees you as just another pebble on a beach."

- Zack de la Rocha

Band Page: Inside Out

One of Southern California's most inspiring and incredible hardcore bands. Zack and Mark from Hard Stance, Vic from Beyond and Chris from Chain of Strength. Emotion, anger and angst from a veritable hardcore supergroup. We won't mention that Zack later went on to front Rage Against The Machine, that would be cheesy.

After Chain of Strength, Chris Bratton was in Statue, another record on Revelation worth checking out. More melodic, but equally powerful.

Inside Out had other songs than released on Revelation. Find live bootlegs and you'll get to hear other songs that were pretty good.

its been about a decade since i was liatening to inside out, so i really don't care if "dedicated fans" get pissed. To me, it was blown up years ago when Rage got big, and people had to look for his earlier stuff

the Youth of Today song was One Night Stand, a cover of David Cassidy from the Partidge Family. Its actually a really good song. Sounds just like a YOT song, except Partridge Family Lyrics.

When everyone thinks of Inside Out they think of Zach,... but I have always thought of Vic. At the time his guitar playing was a little different from the rest, and he kept the music he wrote catchy and aggressive. Vic has been in a ton of great hardcore bands!! Don't sleep on BEYOND! And who can forget 108?? Around the time when Shelter was getting all soft, 108 came out and kicked everyones ass. Did anyone see them cover "no spiritual surrender"?? Crazy times!

In most recent years he played with the new Burn, Uniqua and Charge. Check out his site at http://www.static-void.com/
