Its Aug. 6 issue features 10 stories on Coleman as a candidate, as well as a poster stating “Recall Gray Davis, Elect Gary Coleman.” One article says “Under the rules of the recall election, any jerk can run for governor. All you need is $3,500 and 65 friends who’ve had a bit too much to drink, and the state is legally obligated to put you on the ballot.” Coleman is quoted as saying “I am probably the most unqualified person to run for governor, but I’m willing to do it as a goof if you are.” This isn’t Coleman’s first spark of interest in politics. In 2000, he announced a desire to challenge Senator Dianne Feinstein, but never did. According to the Internet Movie Database, Coleman was discovered by a talent scout for Norman Lear who signed him for a part in a TV revival of “The Little Rascals.” That show was never made, but in 1978 he was cast as Jackson, a young boy who along with his brother Willis was adopted by a rich businessman, Phillip Drummond. At the peak of his career, he made $70,000 an episode, but later sued his parents over misappropriation of his trust fund. Coleman has nephritis, a congenital kidney defect that has stunted his growth. He has had two kidney transplants, one in 1978, one in 1984
