Gap years

im coming to the age where i want to start thinking about taking a gap year before heading to university. right now i have 2 pretty rough ideas:

1) concentrate on my djing. try to get as many gigs as possible, work my way up as it were. if this proves successfull im wondering if it could lead to a career in this sector of the media industry (hopefully what ill be doing at uni).

2) work and travel in australia / usa. not much info on this one, but i think it sounds exciting.

are there people here who have taken gap years? what did you do? any advice / comments would be appreciated.

I did not take a break, just went right to it, number one sounds cool, that saying youll probably be pretty popular in college with those skills, everyone I know here that does that are huge commodities for parties, clubs etc....always working your skills on something you love and are good at is an excellent thing to do and continue

Travelling is always fun and proves to be a nice break for some people, it just really depends on if you mind not going right away, then whether or not you wanna work on dj'ing or just be chilleando.

maybe half and half, spend some time away, then come back work on some gigs and hit school.

goodluck either way. Ive known plenty of kids that took a year off before school, it all works out.

yeah right.... sneak popular in college?

just playing ya! ;)

I took about 3/4 of a year off in between highschool

and college. I left highschool in January after exams

and started the film school in September. That was plenty

of time off to really feel like I had moved forward. One thing

I'd reccomend though is you must make a point of being broke.

It's a bad thing to start making real money too soon if you

actually plan on going back to college. A friend of mine left

highschool at the same time and he got a factory job right away.

Well then with the slave wage he moved out, bought a car and

incured a heap of debt. It took him about 5 years to get his shit

straight and finally head off to college. The money is really tempting

but you should focus on goingback to school.

It's good to keep spinning tracks but dont count on that as a future.

The dj's I know who are local cats but actually make money do

so though production and touring. All of which would be helped by an

education to keep you finances and business in check. I'm not saying

stop the focus on your skills, but do be honest with the employment

potential. Make sure you pick up a trade (music production and engineering?)

as a fall back.

Good luck sneakers!

thanks for the advice so far yoink and kilo. i havent worked out exactly what i want to do when im older, but i want to do it in the media industry which is pretty much certain.

with the djing, i know ill probably never make "it" in any crazy extreme way, i just love doing it and it would be safe to make a little pocket money through out uni by spinning.

i hear you about being broke...i know that feeling now! haha

I first thought this thread would be about

when you get old enough to wear clothing from the 'Gap'.

Damn sneakers... that's for making me feel old.

i thought taking a gap year would be an excellent way for me to grow as a person.

My gap year has turned into 4 gap years full of being arrested and more

stress than anyone needs to deal with in a lifetime. Do college and get it out of the way. You'll have plenty of time to travel later in life.

the gap year sounds great in theory but when it comes right down to it, the possibility of the gap year turning in to gap years is much more likely to happen. i'd suggest knocking school out first. my 2 cents..

me too. i'm 20 now, and i feel like i've got the rest of my life afterwards for travelling and stuff. like a couple of people have just said, theres a possibilty of a gap year turning into gap years, and i think i'd probably never get another chance to be as focused as i am now on working hard at uni. i feel like its now-or-never...

I went straight out of highschool. I would recommend it because then it's done and over with. I have friends that are starting this year, it's going to be another 3 years at least before they can do anything.

Now that I'm done I have to earn some money and then sail away into the sunset.....

dont take a gap year, the shit is poison.

and honestly, will university really prevent you from djing ? as if, if you had time off, you would spent every day mixing.... i think you would very soon get bored if you did nothing but that everyday. go to uni, and keep mixing for pleasure and get your mind off things, and you will get better without needing a gap year, trust me.

a friend´s advice;)

yeah... get college done while you can.

You dont want to be the 'old guy' in your classes.

I'm not sure why but it just seems like the girls are younger than

the guys in college. Maybe they fast track and work harder?

Either way... you do not want to be the old guy.

i was gonna spend a year after high school just taking art and music classes so it would be like a break but i'd be able to get right back into he swing of real school the next year... even that turned into almost 2 years... i doubt i'd be back in school now if i'd taken a real break...

*edit* the first year of college is fucking pie anyway...

I just graduated and will be taking my gap year now.

School is out of the way, i've got some coin saved up, and i'm not overly eager to jump into the workforce.

Plus w/ my degree + skillset I know it won't be a problem finding a job when I get back, so I'm just gonna go until I run out iof money.

As for Dj'ing...I dunnp what skill level you hope to accquire, but you don't need to take a year off for that. I DJ'ed all throughout college for fun and profit. I'm not super good, but i'm good enough to rock a house party or small club. I just practice weeknights when I'm bored.

I just wanna get my shit out of the way, I dont reckon its worth fucking around for a year when you could be doing productive shit... but if I have bricked my exams then I will apply next year and take a forced gap year.

i took two and a half years off in the middle of college..

best thing i couldve done

i worked as a chef, and became a damn fucking good one, and very experienced..

i also got into graffiti, those were the important development years

and taking time off made me get more and more focused

serious about my major, which was tough and took a lot of dedication

which i built up during those slave labor years..

do it

o0o, contradiction to the many before you in the thread..

basically, as of now im undecided about going or not. i have to A)get through next year and the exams which come with them B)save money and C) hope i dont have to retake this year...thus prolonging the time till i could go.

but if i do have to retake this year, i wont go on one cos i wouldnt want to be that old and going into uni.

you also need to figure that !@#$% has some serious drive.

I mean you dont become a high tech lab star by slacking.

Might you do some slacking sneak?

and contradictory to everything I previously said...

When you're out of college there's probably going to be some

form of student debt and it's really hard to take time off and travel

around while the debt is hanging over your head. Make sure you make

money in college and try not to waste it all on records and brandy (ya geezer!)
