Tapeworm

"Taenia tapeworms can range in size from about 0.04 inch to over 50 feet"

"Each segment, or proglottid, may contain as many as 40,000 eggs."

"The most serious tapeworm infestation in humans is caused by the ingestion of T. solanum eggs through fecal contamination, which results in the person serving as the intermediate, rather than the primary, host. The embryos migrate throughout the body, producing serious illness if they lodge in the central nervous system."

Kaluga – a “golden” fish

Kaluga, an endemic of the Russian Far East, is the largest fresh water fish, whose grown female (weighing 400-500 kg) produces 50-60 kg of black caviar. Uncontrolled fishing and the use of barbarian techniques are fatal for this wonderful and indeed “gold” fish. This photo was taken in 2002 at Amur River in Khabarovsk Krai.

You know what's funny? I used to handle brown recluses like they were a fucking action figure when I was smaller, cause I thought they were just some dumb spider. Now that I know what the fuck they really are I'm definitely not gonna touch the fuckers.

I've been trying forever to catch a tailess whip scorpion (called "Guabá" around these parts) to keep it as a pet, but I haven't seen one in a long while. I saw a bunch when I was little in some small caves in Jájome (birthday party central), but they all scurried away.

Basilisk running on water (Jesus Lizard).

My personal favorite...

"The sloth is one of the most facinating animals in Costa Rica, and one of the most difficult to see. They are acutally quite common, but they move so slowly in the trees that they are much more difficult to find than the monkeys. Fortunately if you are lucky enough to encounter a sloth, you will have no trouble taking pictures of it!

The sloths of Costa Rica live a relaxed life. With few natural predators and a supply of all the leaves they can eat, they have it made in the treetops. Their biggest problem is the destruction of their habitat by humans. If you are a sloth, you have trouble getting out of the way when your forest is being cut down!

The sloth moves incredibly slowly. It's amazing to watch, like watching a normal animal in slow-motion film. Indeed, sloths move so amazingly slowly that they often grow mold, moss, and fungus in their thick hair, and most sloths are host to a wide variety of insect pests and parasites. They don't seem to mind this though; perhaps they are used to it. Just part of the life of a sloth.

There are two reasons why sloths move so slowly. One is that sloths eat only leaves, which are a very low-energy food. This doesn't give the sloth much energy for moving fast. The other reason is that they are sometimes preyed upon by birds which find their prey by seeing motion. The idea is that if the sloth moves slowly enough, it won't be seen. This seems to work fairly well for sloths, and they can be found all over Costa Rica.

Sometimes a sloth will fall out of a tree, and lie around on the ground for a while before slowly picking itself up, moving (very slowly) to another tree, and climbing it (again, very very slowly). This is an excellent oppoutunity for taking pictures, and this is indeed how we got our pictures of sloths.

The sloths of Costa Rica are beautiful, facinating animals which are suffering from the destruction of their habitat like all other jungle creatures. Sloths need plenty of trees to survive, and they cannot live in the clear-cut areas left behind by loggers. Please, help to save the sloths, work to prevent the distruction of their rainforest habitat."

I got bitten on the finger by some spider a few days ago at Blockbuster video. Of all the fucking places in the world, I get bitten at Blockbuster. Insanity.

I didn't even see the spider... I noticed a few minutes later when my finger started burning... it was swollen and had a pair gnar fang marks on it. The irony of the situation is that I was renting "Underworld", which contains vampires.
