What?? Philosophical What???

Philosophical thought on the nature of perception occupies some of the most significant concerns in the history of philosophy. At first, perception may seem quite simple._ Right now I am perceiving my coffee mug._ I open my eyes, look at the mug and see it._ What could be simpler?_ The mug is there, I am here, there’s no obstruction between us in this clean, well lit room, thus, I have no difficulty seeing the mug: I perceive it visually._ And I may reach out and grasp it, thus perceiving it through sense of touch. Just as there is nothing between me and the mug to prevent me from seeing it, there is no obstruction between me and the mug to prevent me from reaching out and feeling it._ Likewise, I may smell and taste the coffee contained therein, and dropping the mug, there may be plenty for me to hear as well._ Philosophical reflection renders things much more complicated, however._ While common sense may say that there is nothing between me and the mug to prevent me from seeing it, much philosophical thought on the matter has led to the view that my mind itself gets in between me and the mug and that I never actually perceive the mug itself, but only states of my mind that at best, represent the presence of a mug._ But the mug itself, a thing that exists independently of my mind, is necessarily and permanently beyond the grasp of my mind._

im perceving a sensation from down below... i see my pants grow larger.. what my eyes see and what my mind thinks is an obstruction from what i must do... i feel my hands grasp my zipper and i perceive the feeling of my giant coming through my boxers... its bulges and contracts as the blood rushes through the tiny veins that give it life... i clasp my hands around the throbbing snake and perceive to gentle stroke the semi-smooth surface of my pulsating man cock... i perceive the sensation of a rumble in my sack as it grows tighter to my body i shiver, goose bumps arise over my body...i take in a deep breath, clench the porno mag in my hand and listen to the distant crumbling of the pages as i percieve the feeling of an orgasmic blast of hot cum-lava rushing out my spitting snake...i look down and percieve the image of thinned out creamy white yogurt all over the page of which i have slayed...im spent and need a cigar.....ahhhhh......:D

Your views of this world are based upon sensory perception, and then your interpretation of that sensory perception.

You and I may see the Coffee cup but do you know it exists? We both can see and touch it which leads us to believe it does, our senses, yet similar, are genetically different and what’s more our interpretation of this sensory information is different again. Now if we were to talk about what we have seen, describing the cups features your choice of words and your interpretation of those words would be again different to mine, further layering this abstraction of the basic idea of seeing and talking about the cup.

Plato asked a similar question more than 2000 years ago, “when we see a horse it is different to a horse we have seen in the past, how do we know they are both horses?”

It is slightly dated now but a great example of the question posed? How do we both know if we are seeing the same thing?

Plato out forward an idea in which before we exist on earth we are part of what is known as the “perfect world” (note: this is long before Christ) , and in this world we can a perfect version of all forms, when we are born we retain a subconscious memory of this and can identify the horse on earth , although different, because we have seen the horse in its perfect form.

This is a question of reality, what is the common reality between us and the cup?

I would argue in the example that we can identify it is a cup because we share a similar context and have similar ability to perceive, if you or I were blind or could not sense touching the cup it would be quite different again. Could we still agree that it is actually a ‘blue’ cup?

Reality is entirely subjective the second you perceive it , it becomes abstracted, the one thing that we have in common is this notion of reality and an interest in what is common between humans. To truly understand reality it would be to remove oneself entirely from our perception and interpretation, would this in fact be death?

-nice to see an intelligent response :king:

To 'step out of our perception' is impossible, i reckon it would be pretty nuts on the 'outside'!
