serum Posted February 23, 2004 Share Posted February 23, 2004 Originally posted by krs702 serum, how long have you lived in japan? 4 years the japanese life is very stressful but only because they make it that way. the elementary school is relatively the same as american schools except that they can get away with alot more. but the anal parents will be already preparing them to go to english schools atleast once a week. juniour high is extremely difficult. they begin their year with writing the abcs to learning highschool level english. they stress studying and no speaking so japanese people can take a test in english but not speak or understand worth shit most of the time. they finish school then go to and english study school and perhaps even a club activity like music or sports. most kids dont get home until 7-8 at night. just to enter highschool you must pass a test. entrance into highschool isnt guaranteed. its extremely competitive and similar to shit we are doing in college. once you enter hs its pretty laid back however the big picture is the preparation for the university entrance exams. the tests are very difficult and this is where suicide comes into play. if you fail the entrance exam you cannot take the test again until next year. you can apply to several universities however you must pay around $2000-10,000 for each time you take the test. most kids understandably crack under the pressure and either choose to become an extreme recluse or die. once they get into university they dont have to do anything to pass. just come once a month and you get a diploma. japan is very ass backwards to americans. whatever your school name will depend on what job is guaranteed for you. then you get into a company you work and average of 100-120 hours a week with 50% being unpaid. mostly 7am-11pm days with people even sleeping over at work, never seeing their families, or ever doing a hobby. manga and anime is a result from the culture itself. all the robots that you see are basically them. they are the robots, no opinion no interest and no hope of ever living life. the aliens that invade and kill everyone are the foreignors. mostly chinese, korean, and then american aliens coming to take over `their` planet. japan is not for the lazy or the poor. japan can be a great place for westerners because we reap the benifits but discard whatever drawbacks of the culture there is. the japanese feel compelled to stay all day at work where as when its 3:00 the americans are already out of the door. my biggest complaint here is that i cant have a decent conversation with anyone. they have no opinions on anything and if they do they are childish if that. life skills and common sense are extinct here. but lately humans in general seem to lack any of these traits either Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
