yomommasaho
^im feel in this whole page from the ct thread. none of these are original and most lack somewhat on the photographic quality end, but i dig em for the composition and content, both in terms of the actual graff and how the pic was taken. mn1_fuckos
Hollywood glamour assignment from school, instructor wanted us to use at least 4 strobes i could have knocked it out with two speed lights so i shot it with 5 lights to be somewhat of a smart ass. MrChupacabra
Key light + fill light. Thats really all you need to know. Then you can throw in some backlighting or other shit if you're so inclined. It's really just a matter of having access to lights/flashes/stands, having a bit of photography knowledge, and some practice. As MN mentioned, 4 strobes is overkill. At least for the vast majority of situations.
mn1_fuckos
We're really technical at my school we use the light meter during every shoot and obtain accurate lighting ratio's im too the point where i can work comfortably without using it but every now and then i still do. I shot my phone on this black on black glass assignment. we had to create separation between the object and the black glass by creating highlights and adding white sheets of paper to the closest part of the camera to add the subtle reflection at the bottom of the phone I used 5 lights to light this. when shooting reflective products its easier to use more light at different time to create different highlights and reflections

mn1_fuckos
Heres an attempt at tryin to shoot a ironlak can of froggy green on black glass. It all starts with one light then you build around that. the highlight on the left side is a 3 foot by 2 foot piece of white foam core. MrChupacabra
I used 5 lights to light this. when shooting reflective products its easier to use more light at different time to create different highlights and reflections Personally, I think the screen is washed out on this one and has no pop or vibrancy to it. The can of ironlak is nice though. I should probably specify that when I say 5 lights is overkill, I'm talking for the average photographer, as yomommasaho was just commenting on learning. Obviously, a high level, professional, fashion/product type of photographer is going to rock a ton of lights for some situations, but it is not needed for most situations, most of the time. mn1_fuckos
MrChupacabra: Totally agree with you but the requirement for the assignment was if your using anything with a screen it has to appear to be on. i had to layer in the screen in photoshop at 50% opacity, but i didn't want to lose the gradient on it either so i had to compromise the vibrancy that the gradient gave to achieve the look that is asked for. The lights were all on at different times although they did stay stationary when lighting the reflective surface of the phone. Different lights do different things they also act differently so when lighting product its not unusual to use 3-5 lights. This photo was also shot with a 4x5 view camera with a p+25 digital back This page is dope! MN what surface did you take that last one on? I shot it on black glass with a straw yellow Roscoe gel on a white background thats what made the yellow gradient
MrChupacabra
Indeed. It wasn't meant as a shot at you at all, and obviously I didn't know the specific requirements for the assignment. As I mentioned, there are definitely situations where a lot of lights are needed, and product photography can certainly fit that mold. For someone learning lighting, I think it's beneficial to really get a grip on 2 and 3 light setups since there is a ton you can do with only a couple of lights.
