The shutter speed controls how long the shutter stays open.

The aperture (f-stop) determines how much light enters the camera via the lens. A smaller f-stop (f/16) lets in less light, creates more depth of field and requires a longer shutter speed. A larger f-stop (f/2.8) lets in more light, creates less depth of field and requires a shorter shutter speed.

You can also push the ISO which would be the same as changing f-stops.

A long exposure is just the product of a slow shutter speed.

When you use a higher ISO like 1600-3200 you need less light to make an exposure which means the shutter doesnt need to stay open as long.

but then it gets grainy sometimes, and iso does play a role in your long exposure shots

Yes the higher the iso the more grain you get but with a long exposure you leave your shutter open longer which means you dont need a high iso so youre not going to have a grain problem.

dogchap - nice pool shot. *last one is nice too

fpo- nice same shot.

just for the record almost every shot i posted was at 1600 iso and all the way open to 5.6 or less.

shutter speed was as fast as i could get it. i would love to take a nice long exposure of that spot like fpo, but i hate carrying a tripod. so thats why i shoot extra grainy and blown out.

photography is fun.
