Guest imported_Tesseract Posted May 1, 2003 Share Posted May 1, 2003 Some years ago, when i was visiting the states, a kid asked me how we deal with the different language on films..i explained to him that they put letters on the screen with the translated dialogues...he thought about it for a second and he replied "So, to you guys watching a movie is like reading a book?..duh" He obviously didnt realise what i meant, or i just didnt explain it enough. The thing is that in countries that people speak english and dont really keep up with foreign movies you just dont have to deal with stuff like that. So, there are two schools in watching foreign language films, the subtitles and the recited translation over the original audio. Most european countries use the second, with french, germans and italians on top of that shit...i really cant think of a silliest thing to do, when you take the actors voice/tone of voice/accent away is like you're cancelling half the acting...can you imagine Deniro saying "vous me parlez?" instead of the famous "you're talking to me?"... thats what i thought... I even watched an american porn film were they had doubled 'dialogues' with italian...i thought all the girls moan the same and 'nice ass you got there' isnt a key line in a porn film. Apart from that, you got to pay a shitload of money to local actors that will double each voice in a film and will do it properly, while it only takes one translator and some editing to do the subtitles...the only big turnoff with the subs is that when you sit in the front rows of the theater you're getting mad confused and eventually dizzy...but front rows suck anyway. To end the delirium, what really pisses me off is that most countries that use voice translation, do it mostly due to patriotism...if you ever been to paris and you heard people order "one bread sliced in two with cheese and ham inbetween" just to avoid the word "sandwich" you know what i'm talking about...each one loves his own language but get over it, if its american films you like to watch, you better not halfass it..you may even learn to speak it through it. ---------------------------------FIN-------------------------------------------- Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Customer: "Is the movie subtitled?" Me: "Actually it's a mix of English dialog and only some Spanish subtitles" Customer: "OK, nevermind then. I'll see the other movie." I do agree that some alements of the performance are lost when a foreign language voice track is laid over the original. However with the advances of ADR (Automatic Dialog Replacement) the new voice is almost perfect. And a decent quality voice track in the language of the consumer/viewer only adds to the cinematic experience and the focus is returned to drama on screen. I personally prefer the subtitles (as long as it's only one language). You need to figure that most 'foreign' films are praying for North American acceptance, and if their films are more accessable with transltions then cool for them. And they HAVE to be yellow with a faint black edge. ps. !@#$% Posted May 1, 2003 Share Posted May 1, 2003 subtitles!!! unless its "They Still Call Me Bruce", there is no need for lousy dubbing.. subtitles are always better .. i think this is the only way to truly capture the performance of the actor..by hearing his tone, his inflection, all the subtleties of emotion reflected in voice... perfect example... La Femme Nikita the dubbing is crappy, the woman's voice doesnt look like it would be nikita's, lousy lousy..it really detracts i saw Ringu the other day..subtitled..it was awesome and of course Traffic was fantastic..i was so relieved when the mexicans spoke spanish, not convenient english (which would have ruined suspension of disbelief) the only thing about subtitles i don't like? its much harder to draw when watching a subtitled movie Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

And there's a technique called 'rhythmabanding' where they make a linear breakdown of the 'lip-flap' and write accordingly. The actors also place intonations in the right spots. cool no? I was in the paris subway with my girl, and there were some frenchies about our age that thought we were english ans started talking shit in english to us, 'go back to london' and shit like that...i replied in english and said something like 'whats your problem?' they replied, in french that time, something that really sounded bad...i got pissed and i started talking shit 10 times louder in greek this time...you shoulda seen their faces... VAITOMANOCU Posted May 1, 2003 Share Posted May 1, 2003 subtitles all the way. i recently saw a danish filmed called 'open hearts', and if it were'nt subtitles a whole lot would have been lost. danish is a really weird language, but it's still so much better to just hear/see it the way it's meant to be heard/seen. one of the few dvd's that i own is 'crouching tiger, hidden dragon', and while the dubbed version still holds up and like zesto said, makes it reach a wider audience..still, i watched it with the subtitles and it was just a different experience. some things were even translated differently. having grown up in brazil, i remember when i was younger i would go see films down there, and if it was a major theatre it would most likely be in english, with portuguese subtitles. so while everyone would be reading away, i never had to deal with that. if it were a brazilian film i would have no problem either because i spoke like a native. but see, if you watch some of the spanish channels they have brazilian soap operas (which i should mention, are nothing like american soaps. these have a lot of substance, really good stories and actors that really get you hooked). these are dubbed on the spanish channel and the voices just don't do it any justice. i always wish they would just show it with spanish subtitles so i could hear it in portuguese. oldenglish Posted May 1, 2003 Share Posted May 1, 2003 i speak english with moderate skills in ghettonese. this cat from my crew spent a year in paris. he said if you dont know how to speak french the people that will be your friends are the dirtiest nastiest freaks ever. so after he learned to speak french he said his french freinds would come over and they would smoke insane amounts of hash in his jail cell sized apartment while he spoke french to them and they replied in english. then there was somthing about an eviction due to them leaving tags in his building with a fire extingiusher.... or they mighta just done vandalized it. this other cat from my crew speak fluent chinese. hes funny, he gets kung fu flicks to practice his chinese dialects. i would like to learn to speak and write arabic, italian, spanish, and then maybe some german, dutch and whatever else comes along. Japanese and chinese is pretty much impossible to learn I hear. Unless you attend a high ranking university, or learn it from someone or adapt the dialects correctly. anyway....ramble ramble. Switched it over to Mandarin and it was all good. I thought it was kinda fucked up that they made English the default language. I feel, like censorship, you lose out on what the artist/artists are trying to say. You know what I mean? Also, I noticed, when watching "Y Tu Mamma Tambien" that what is said on screen, and what is said in the subtitles isnt what is really being said!! Like the slang isnt interpreted properly.
