Always-on broadband to be available for the first time in Stonehaven Internet access delivered to homes via electrical sockets Simple installation – no new wires or cables Stonehaven’s net surfers are to have access to high speed, always-on internet when Scottish Hydro-Electric introduces an innovative new scheme to the town. The cutting edge project will use the electricity network to deliver broadband communications to homes and businesses in Stonehaven at speeds many times faster than that currently available, even in most urban locations. The new technology is called Powerline Communication (PLC) and takes advantage of Scottish Hydro-Electric’s extensive electricity network in the area. PLC sends the broadband signal along the electricity wires and cables that bring power to homes – and it’s delivered directly through standard electrical sockets. Internet access in rural areas like Stonehaven is usually limited to that available by modem through the traditional telephone network, with speeds limited to just 56 kbps. In many urban areas, ADSL and cable services can deliver internet access at up to 512kbps. Scottish Hydro-Electric’s new PLC broadband service can provide internet access at as much as 2000kbps – almost forty times faster than is available in Stonehaven at the moment. What’s more this speed is available in both directions so that information can be sent at high speed as well as received. Scottish Hydro‘s Director of Telecoms Keith Maclean said: “Rural communities are usually denied access to real broadband, so we’re very proud to be able to provide a top-notch internet service to an area that has been neglected by other companies. This is an affordable service that will allow almost every home and business in Stonehaven to surf the net, download files and play on-line games even faster than someone in a town or city.” As well as speeding up internet access for leisure use, it’s predicted that the new service will prove to be a boon for local businesses. Keith added: “We initially trialled this service in Crieff and Campbeltown and found that small businesses and people who work from home benefited enormously from high-speed internet access. It’s perfect for companies who need to send and receive large files and it keeps the phone line free so there are no missed calls.” The new service will be available from mid-2003.
