can someone explain something to me....

Recommended Posts

so, we have sanctions and trade embargo's on Cuba, yet we also have a military base there.

can anyone explain that to me? this isnt like a retorical question to point out the hypocritical nature of nearly everything our government does, its a genuine question.

smart?

anyone?

actually, we dont really fuck cuba over. castro is one of the few people who has stood up to us, and kept his country intact.

this 'hippy' thing is a bit ill informed. if i didnt have an arsenal of weapons, bathed everyday, hadent smoked pot since 1993, and didnt hate hippies myself, then i might agree with you. unfortunitly, i just cant do that.

keep throwing it around like you have an idea though, it serves to make you look as ignorant as you [clearly] are.

I think you answered your own question, the military is there to regulate the trading embargo on Cuba. Not to mention that US military will park themselves wherever they feel like, we are the "global police" think about how many other countries we've intruded upon.

yeah, but no.

jamaica is less than a hudred miles from cuba, strategically more usefull, and indebted to us to a point we can do anything we please.

i dont believe we're just occupying cuban land against their wishes. obviously its not a far fetched idea, but it doesnt make any sense in this situation. our base there is not to enforce any embargo. or maybe it is.

i dont know. the whole thing honestly is completely beyond me.

wheres smart when you need something from him?

well, it's late and I'm faded but... as I recall, it goes back to the Spanish American war... if memory serves, some marines were camped on the bay and were killed by Spanish soldiers, this started the war...

we won...

and this led up to the Platt agreement which basically said we could do what we want in Cuba and then we put some deal on them where we basically leased the land forever, without question...

and like hell we were gonna give it over to Castro in the 50's...

basically it's squatting with weapons...

All I know is that the US Navy leaves Vieques on May 1st. That is very, very good.

As much as I hate to give big ups for any reason these days to the US, I gotta hand it to them for staying true to their word and leaving when they said they would. I was absolutely convinced that they'd pull off shady crap to extend the stay until we didn't care any more about it. Beer,

my interpretation

strategically, cuba is a dream for the military, as has been perfectly illustrated by the need to detain terrorists there..

think about it: they can't lock up so many terrorists on american soil...it makes us a huge target for more terrorists..granted, we have a few terrorists in amercian jails (like the masterminds of the first WTC bombing)..but obviously, that hasn't helped us-terrorist relations, right? so why not dump all these so-called suspected terrorists on a plot of land that has absolutely zero to do with us citizens, us land, etc, and everything to do with us might, control, military etc..if a terrorist group decided to target the prison where all their pals were hemmed up, they'd have to take their beef to the people of cuba..who our government really doesn't give a fuck about..

so yeah, the terrorist shit is a recent development, but the us has a history of tense, stand off like situations that drug on, or are dragging on, for years and years....its just our military's way of reminding everyone who 'is really in charge around here' we've had an, uh....38th (?) parallel thing goin on with north korea for years...talk about your mothafuckin obstinate dictators ruling with an iron fist, defeating america, but still not totally getting his way..

i guess might makes right..and like you said, no way in goddamn hell was the us giving up its military base once some old scrubby commi rebels took the place over way back when...

maybe the political climate in the us can explain why he couldn't get us totally out...commis were the epitome of evil back then (what terrorists are today) ..they were the closest ones to us, and if we couldn't be in bed with the government we were going to keep a very close eye on them...hell, we tried to invade and take over that repressive government too!

history repeating itself..

that repressive govrernment that has one of, if not the lowest infant mortality rate of any country in the world. has free national health care, and a citizenship that no matter the spin we try and place on them, are very loyal to their leader. a leader who has stayed true to his word and his people and was never able to bought by us.

sounds represive to me.

Ahh Cuba.

long story short...

There was a huge American influence (casinos, booze, the mob and all the bad stuff)

going on in Cuba under the old government. Batista gained control in a seriously bloody coup.

This government was recognized by the states as vaild. More of a reason to be pissed.

Castro pretty much came

down from the hills with the guerillas and said a big 'fuck you' to Batista and the u$a.

a detailed timeline

a popular cuban ideology...

'There's a hundred million homeless children in the world. Not one of them lives in Cuba.'

i'm at work and always have to sneak a peek at this website, so i don't have the capacity to get into any debates. i think i've ranted enough about stupid american-imperalism on this board...

so i must say the positive thing about sanctions against cuba is that they dont get new cars. a friend of mine had the rare opportunity to visit there, and he showed me pictures of all these dope classic cars from the 50s. cars are way more precious to them since they don't get new ones, so they take really good care of them. every car you see is a dope classic. sure, not everyone can afford a car, but the US would be a lot better if way less people drove, and stopped consuming so much resources to buy new cars all the time.

Also, since there's no huge focus on capitalism and commerce, the culture is so rich there. the people fine tune their art and music. Everyones heard of great cuban jazz (Ry Cooder's movie BVSC, anyone?), and the art i've seen from there has so much feeling to it.

okay, i'll stop talking like i've been there....

dude, with the amount of morons on this site, you never know who's being sarcastic, and who is just a complete fucking retard.

all good.

kilo, thanks for the link. that was dope. in the early 90's i went through a big 'revolutionary' period. i started to look into castro, but ran out of steam and kind of forgot about him for a while. i need to pick that up again.

cuba is dope. if i could speak a lick of spanish, id be trying to make my way over there right now.

wait my history might be shady but wasnt the war basically made up to give some presidential candidate weight politically?

im not all hip on alot of current event and history so im glad this question was brought up since i have pondered it myself(usually on the toilet where deep thoughts drop out so to speak).

ith my beliefes, they'll call me a traitor either way.

its really a catch 22.

if you claim to care so much about 'humanity' or whatever, that you can no longer live in a country you dont agree with, how is your leaving that country really changing anything? its just 'washing your hands' of the blood that will continue to spill, regardless of your citizenship. i almost consider it a larger form of treason, than to remain as a 'traitor'. 'traitors' effect change, ex-patriots sip daquri's in thailand.

i dont drink.

i have honestly thought about just walking away lately. i doubt id go to cuba, more likely would be sweeden, switzerland or one of those surrounding countries that seem to have their head on straight. unfortunitely(?) there are certian medical situations well outside my control that require me to stick around western medicine for the time being. i am however begining to construct my life, with the potential goal of leaving here, perhaps for good, in the not-so-distant future. we'll see. things are very quickly going from bad to wors, and each day they seem that much more hopeless.

i think i need to go jogging or something.

at that point in history, almost anything could have been used to start off that particular war. most politicians and social figureheads including teddy rosevelt and like jp morgan were openly goading the spanish into war. this was just a timely excuse.
