24-7 guard for Opera House

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/03/18/...7749748004.html

The Opera House sails will be guarded 24 hours a day, seven days a week after two protesters climbed to the top of one and painted "No War" before being arrested today.

The incident is an embarrassment after security was upgraded at the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge last November because of the growing risk of terrorist attack.

Opera House chief executive Norman Gillespie said the extra guards had been decided on following a security review in the wake of this morning's incident.

"While we respect the right of Australians to protest, it was a totally unacceptable way of doing it," he said.

"To deface such a wonderful icon ... It was an act of reckless vandalism, totally unacceptable."

After being led down from the sails by Police Rescue, British astronomer Dr Will Saunders, 42, and Australian David Burgess, a 33-year-old environmental campaigner from Bucketty, NSW, were charged with malicious damage and "climbing a structure and painting it''. The malicious damage charge carries a maximum penalty of 5 years jail.

Dr Saunders, who has lived in Sydney for three years, has also been detained by police under the Migration Act.

Burgess told smh online: ``The majority of Australians are against this war. This is a message to John Howard: please do not go''.

He said ``a national icon is nothing compared to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people''.

When questioned about his malicious damage charge, he said: ``Our prime minister is about to go in and maliciously damage an entire nation''.

Asked whether the protest was worth it, Burgess replied: ``Absolutely it was''.

Saunders told journalists: ``I love your country'' and insisted he would have made the same protest in London, on the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, had he been there.

He said he was ``not worried'' about the malicious damage charge. ``If war isn't the ultimate damage, I don't know what is'', he said.

Both men were released on bail this afternoon after being charged, on condition they not enter the CBD until the mention of their case at the Downing Centre local court on April 16.

Saunders said he was ``very much in need of a cup of tea'' after he was released by police.

Police said the incident happened at 8.56am. The intruders were first spotted by security guards on closed circuit TV. Guards called police when they couldn't talk them down.

Superintendent Phil Rogerson of The Rocks police station said the incident was "a wake up call for everybody in Australia".

Is Iraq a threat to the United States?

Iraq's military is much smaller and weaker than before the 1991 Gulf War; the Pentagon estimates it is only about one-third its earlier size. It lacks the missile capacity to reach even most of its neighbors, let alone the United States. President Bush on one occasion claimed Iraq had pilotless drones that could fly across the ocean and attack the U.S., an obvious flight of rhetorical fancy that was never repeated. Iraq has attempted to attack U.S. bombers in the "no-fly" zones, planes that are illegally intruding into Iraqi airspace and attacking Iraqi targets; withdrawal of U.S. planes would end these [so far unsuccessful] efforts to bring them down. (See question 5 for more on the "no-fly" zones.)

In the State Department's 2001 edition of its annual Report on Global Terrorism, the U.S. acknowledged that Iraq "has not attempted an anti_Western attack since its failed plot to assassinate former President Bush in 1993 in Kuwait." (Whether this plot even happened remains in dispute.)

Does Iraq have weapons of mass destruction?

We don't know for sure - that's why the UN inspectors are in Iraq. As of the end of 2002, the inspectors have not indicated they have found evidence of any viable weapons programs. When the earlier inspection team, UNSCOM, left Iraq on the eve of Washington's December 1998 Desert Fox bombing, they said they had found and destroyed or rendered harmless 90 - 95% of Iraq's WMD programs. Iraq has said that they have destroyed other weapons, but do not have a complete paper trail to fully document their destruction. There is certainly no active nuclear program - that would be easily detectable by satellite and other technologies. While it is possible that some chemical or biological material from earlier weapons programs may remain in Iraq, as yet undetected by UN inspectors, there is no indication that a viable delivery system for such weapons exists.

The Bush administration claims Iraq does have WMDs - but they have refused to reveal the evidence they claim to have to the public and won't even provide all the evidence to the UN inspection teams. This contradicts Washington's claim of an imminent threat from Iraqi WMDs - were there such a threat, U.S. officials would surely immediately provide the inspectors all the information needed to neutralize the threat. By withholding the information, the U.S. seems more interested in playing "gotcha" than in actually finding and rendering harmless any real weapons.

Did Iraq have anything to do with September 11th, or with al-Qaeda? Would going to war against Iraq improve the security of Americans at home and abroad?

Iraq had nothing to do with the September 11th attacks.

In fact, Iraq has a long history of antagonism to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. According to the New York Times: "hortly after Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait in 1990, Osama bin Laden approached Prince Sultan bin Abdelaziz al-Saud, the Saudi defense minister, with an unusual proposition.…Arriving with maps and many diagrams, Mr. Bin Laden told Prince Sultan that the kingdom could avoid the indignity of allowing an army of American unbelievers to enter the kingdom to repel Iraq from Kuwait. He could lead the fight himself, he said, at the head of a group of former mujahideen that he said could number 100,000 men." Even though the offer was undoubtedly exaggerated, bin Laden's hostility toward secular Iraq is clear. There is no evidence that that has changed.

Far from making Americans more secure, there is every reason to fear that war against Iraq will place Americans in greater danger. Across the Middle East, anti-American feeling is already widespread due to U.S. financial and diplomatic backing of Israel's occupation of Palestinian land and its support for corrupt and repressive regimes across the Arab world. A U.S.-led war against Iraq will further exacerbate that anger, perhaps leading more desperate individuals to turn to acts of violence against individual Americans or institutions perceived as symbols of American power or policy

Vandalism gives radical slant to local billboards

By Gloria Young

[Auburn] Journal Staff Writer

Vandals have defaced two Interstate 80 billboards near Auburn during the past few days, leaving environmental and self-image messages.

A Roseville Auto Mall sign, on the right-hand side of the highway traveling west near the Ophir exit, is written over in white lettering that reads just follow "the pollution and the hole in the ozone layer," "stop global warming" and "Earth first." It also includes the anarchist movement symbol – the letter A encircled – and the Web site addresses infoshop.org and crimethinc.com.

About a mile west on the left-hand side of I-80, a sign advertising breast implants has a similar white print lettering bearing the words "Love yourself. You are beautiful the way you are" and the anarchist symbol.

At least one passerby offered her support for the second message in a letter to the editor written to the Journal this week.

"On behalf of women and more especially adolescent girls, I would like to congratulate the brave and benevolent people who are altering the message of the breast implant billboard," Kathy Lowry of Meadow Vista wrote. "These days, the media bombards our young girls with the message that sexiness will get you about anything you desire and that their bodies need to be starved and altered until the Barbie figure is achieved ... Wouldn’t it be fabulous if the 'powers that be' would just make the ultimate statement (you are beautiful the way you are) and have this ridiculously harmful billboard removed from our home?"

Sgt. John Adams, public information officer for the Placer Sheriff’s Department, said Wednesday that no report has been filed in the incidents and that only a small percentage of graffiti cases are prosecuted.

"Reports are usually generated from the victim," he said. "Occasionally reports will begin if we get witnesses to a crime or a suspect of an unreported crime can generate a case."

According to the state penal code, graffiti is a misdemeanor punishable by fines and jail time, depending on the dollar amount of damage.

Adams added that he does not know of any other billboards that were hit by the vandals and is unaware of any previous graffiti incidents in the county that contained the anarchist sign.

A representative from the advertising firm Skyhawk Communications, which handles advertising for the Roseville Auto Mall, said that he was advised of the incidents late last week and knows of no other auto mall billboards being hit. He added that the company is in the process of creating a replacement sign that he expects to go up within a few weeks.

The Web site infoshop.org is an umbrella address for the anarchist movement internationally and offers links to a variety of other like-minded groups. According to the CrimethInc.com Web site, it is broadly associated with the anarchist movement but maintains its own political identity.

There is ONE country that has biological, chemical, AND nuclear weapons stockpiled in large enough quantities to wipe out most of humanity. Not only does this nation refuse to disarm, they contine to build weapons of mass destruction. It is the only nation in history to actually unleash these wepons of mass destruction, causing HUGE civilian casualties, not only once but TWICE. Now, Boys and Girls...can you name this "Rogue" nation?

totally. No conection whatsoever between the white house and the petrochemical industry. It's just a coincidence that iraq has huge oil reserves.

On a side note I wonder if Halliburton is going to be involved in rebuilding postwar iraq and getting at some of those natural resources. I used to follow that company, then the chairman of the board resigned to take another job and they fell off my radar. What was his name? Dick something. Cheney maybe?

And we all know that the Bush family had nothing to do with the Oil industry. Ever. Except for maybe like one time or something.

because, unfortunately they're usually more creative and dedicated to their cause...and with one more day to go I have to say that Bush and the people who elected him are scary as hell...nothing worse than stupid people with power

the best part is that if some writers had painted that, or anyone under the age of 25 for that matter...they'd most likely be in jail for a good while. But if a random over-the-hill scientist and some lady hit a spot, little to nothing happens to them at all.

Oh, and one more thing, (my views on this war aside) whoever it was that called someone a sheep for being pro-war: You can't be a sheep if you are part of the minority, since following the crowd(the majority), is what sheep do, and 2/3 of america is anti-war - you were really making yourself look kind-of, well...to put it lightly - really ignorant.

this war is a positive thing....Iraq is being led a insane violent man and you spineless fools say "NO WAR" "innocent people will die" well WAKE UP innocent people have been dying in that country for centuries..... innocent people have died for every cause... it is something one must consider and accept....

Remember the Kurds ??? if saddam had the capabilites he would surely attack the western nations as he did the kurds.....ever think of this..... ???

and if anyone is going to bring up that the US supplied iraq against the kurds.... that is not valid... it is irrelevent...what is relevent is the present

some of you fools make me sick.... i am not even american and i am appalled by this trendy pathetic anti american notion

"Why of course the people don't want war. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."

Again, I'm not sure what information soures you people are using or if the american educational system is really that fucked up that you kids can't comprehend basic facts any more. Here's a Gallup poll that is the exact opposite of what you just quoted. If I chose too I could find a dozen more results just like it.
