Shot in the dark...

 

It's possible that connecting the bottom of all your letters was a staple element of Chicago writer's outlines back in the day, something they became known for as a region. Kinda like Philly being known for their unique handstyles, it's possible this connecting of letters is Chicago's thing. I did a little investigating and there's plenty of evidence to suggest this was a style element at one point for Chicago writers.
