Hunt for clues in grisly cannibal murder case

December 17 2002

Investigators today resumed their search of a rambling, 30-room, half-timbered manor house in search of clues to a grisly cannibal murder case in Germany, with an official saying there was no evidence of more victims.

"The search is proving very time-consuming because of the size of the house," said state prosecutor Hans-Manfred Jung. "So far we have turned up no evidence that more than one murder was committed here."

Jung also denied published reports claiming that a second cannibal murder case -- unrelated to this one -- had been discovered. "There is no parallel investigation, as far as we have been informed," he said.

More details of the case emerged today, indicating that both victim and killer engaged in cannibalism.

Law officers are studying a one-hour CD-ROM on which the suspect claims he recorded many hours of videotape images. The one-hour home movie details how he and the victim first ate the "flambeed penis" of the victim and then shows how the victim was stabbed repeatedly.

The entire process of dismemberment and packaging of the victim'S flesh are said to be contained in the images on the CD-ROM.

Investigators who have seen the CD-ROM are said to be undergoing psychiatric counselling.

The 41-year-old suspect, identified only as Armin M, admitted having videotaped himself killing the man he had met via a gay internet chat room.

Both men were computer experts, both described as "internet addicts". Authorities filed murder charges against the reclusive computer systems expert on Thursday.

His 42-year-old victim, a computer chip developer at Siemens corporation in Berlin identified only as Bernd Juergen B, willingly allowed himself to be led to the slaughter, police said.

On the morning of his disappearance on March 9, 2001, Bernd Juergen B wrote out his will and had it notarised. He left the bulk of his estate, including a lavish penthouse apartment and ,000 (,600) dollars worth of computer equipment, to his live-in partner, a man named Rene.

According to police, the victim had several thousand dollars in cash and his passport when he travelled 300km from Berlin to the alleged murderer's house near Kassel.

Police say a chat room user tipped them off to the existence of the ads. They now know of at least five respondents to the ad, besides undercover officers who answered it and quickly determined it was meant literally.

The murder suspect was described by neighbours as a pleasant and polite man who kept to himself.

His family moved to the isolated house in the mid-1970s, purchasing the derelict property as a holiday get-away. His parents divorced, and he rarely saw his policeman father or two step-brothers again. He remained in the house with his mother.

He served a dozen years in the German armed forces as a non-commissioned officer in ordinance. He was described as an amiable and conscientious military man.

After leaving the military in 1991, he got re-training as a computer technician and until recently had a job with a software firm in the Rhine Valley city of Karlsruhe, 300km south of Rotenburg.

He stayed on in the old half-timbered house after her death three years ago.

"He was a mama's boy," a neighbour told reporters. "He was totally fixated on his mother, who he said never let him date girls. After she died, he began to thaw out."
