From JFK International Airport:

Take the Airport bus to the Howard Beach "A" train subway station. Take Manhattan-bound "A" train to 14th St. Transfer to the uptown "C" or "E" train (across platform) to 23rd Street.

 

From La Guardia Airport:

Take local bus M60 to Astoria Blvd Manhattan-bound "N" train or to 110th St. downtown "1" or "9" train near Columbia University. Get off at 23rd Street.

 

From Newark International Airport:

Take the AirTrain to Penn Station. Catch the downtown "C" or "E" train to 23rd Street. OR Take Olympia bus to Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd St. & 8th Ave). Take the downtown "C" or "E" train to 23rd Street.

 

From The Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown:

Take the downtown "C" or "E" train to 23rd Street.

 

From Pennsylvania Station:

From Amtrak, NJ Transit or the Newark Airport AirTrain: take the downtown "C" or "E" train to 23rd Street. From the LIRR: take the downtown "1" or "9" train to 23rd Street.

 

From Grand Central Station:

Take the "S" Times Square shuttle to Times Square. Transfer to the downtown "1" or "9" train to 23rd Street.

Chelsea Hotel at night

 

I spent a week working out of the Chelsea Hotel and soon found myself won over by its down-to-earth charms and sense of history.

 

This is the place where Dylan Thomas and Nancy (of Sid Vicious fame) died, Arthur C Clarke wrote the awesome '2001. A Space Odyssey' and Warhol and other famous artists stayed.

 

Shame you can't even get a bloody cup of tea there though!

If you want to check out the trails of the Beat Generation in nowadays New York City, you can't avoid to visit Greenwich Village and Chelsea. The ones who are looking for Rock'n'Roll history, searching for the spirits of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Jim Morrison, Nico or Patti Smith are likely to find some of it within the red brick walls of the Chelsea Hotel, located at 222, West 23rd St. between Seventh and Eight Avenue, where in the past many a famous song has been written.
