Homeless may be put on ships

Recommended Posts

this seems weird . . .

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...be_put_on_ships

With shelter scarce on dry land, the city is looking at cruise ships as possible lodging for the homeless.

But top-of-the-line luxury liners with fancy restaurants, ballrooms and pools aren't in the picture for down-and-outers.

A handful of city officials, led by Homeless Services Commissioner Linda Gibbs, will examine "a couple of retired cruise ships" in the Bahamas today, her spokesman said last night.

The group will fly to the island on Mayor Bloomberg's private jet and return to the city tonight. He'll remain in New York.

"It is just a factfinding mission, extremely preliminary. The trip is to determine if the ships would be safe and applicable to shelter homeless clients," the spokesman said.

"We can't reject any idea that's offered," Gibbs told NBC-TV. "I think we have to be unafraid to think creatively and to explore options that maybe haven't been looked at in the past."

The spokesman declined to say how many officials would accompany Gibbs and which agency they represented.

About 36,000 people stay in shelters in the city each night, according to the Coalition for the Homeless. The city is bound by law to provide free temporary shelter to those who say they have no place to live.

Bloomberg may have declined to go along because he's due at Ground Zero at 11 a.m. today with Gov. Pataki to unveil new plans for 7 World Trade Center.

The city has used ships in novel ways before, putting prisoners on a converted barge in the East River in the early 1990s. The prison ship was reopened in 1998 for a time to house juvenile offenders. Originally published on November 20, 2002

Hulks, Floating Hells: Prisons on the Water

Since the late 1400s, galley ships have gradually been replaced by sailing ships. Rather than destroy the old vessels, many of them are transformed into floating prisons. By the late 1700s, these ships, commonly known as "hulks," are heavily relied upon to ease the overcrowding in land-based facilities. They are often referred to as "floating hells," or "hell holds," since the conditions are just as horrible as in traditional prisons_if not worse. During the American Revolution, many prisoners of war are held on such ships anchored in New York Harbor. Dead bodies are simply thrown overboard. This "temporary" solution to the problem of overcrowding remains a significant part of correctional practices until 1858, and the last hulk won't be put out of commission until 1875.

I'll go one step further...

I'll be the skipper of the World's first America's Cup team made up entirely of rail hobos.

We'll be cooking beans on the foredeck, leaving monikers on the hull, and

plundering every single port we come into.

I'd rather be sailing.

Right now the same sort of thing is happening. They want to get rid of the homeless sleeping on the streets. So they want to make it illegal. But all the shelters are filled up. So if your homeless and think your fucked already...

Kilo 7

Son, I like your style! I volunteer to be in the first draft of tramps.

Actually, there was a serious proposal to house convicted criminals in prisons built in foreign countries--Turkey springs to mind. The idea being that if one cannot obey the law, one forfeits his right to be inside the United States. It would be akin to states sending prisoners from overcrowded prisons in the Northeast to under-utilized prisons in the Southwest and high desert West. Instead of open-air prison camps in Maricopa County, Arizona, it would be open-air prisons in Turkmenistan.

That ought to give criminals pause for thought.

Bad boys, bad boys, what cha gonna do?

What cha gonna do when they ---ship your sorry lawbreakin' ass to Asia?

LOL. I wonder if there are hobos in Turkey?

There's a boat slum down in coranado bay in san diego. all these assed out boats anchored in one area, half of them look like they will sink any day. but people live there, but i guess the city has said no new boats can anchor and once the boats there now sink, those people need to find somewhere else to go. its really crazy, the boat ghetto. as for homless on cruise ships, hmmm, i bet they just want to get them all on there take it out to sea and then it accidentelly sinks...oops....
