The oldest of two sons, Ryan would have soon been entering into his third year at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. An honor student who received a college scholarship for his efforts, Ryan planned to be a doctor. He put his energy into school work, rather than drinking or doing drugs because that was the responsible thing to do. Ryan was thoughtful and caring, with the kind of smile that could light up a room. He loved cats, fishing and jet skiing. He was the kind of kid everyone adored. Read a message of faith from Ryan's cousin Ryan had hopes and dreams. But one bad decision stripped him of his plans and took him so prematurely from his family. One moment without thinking ended it all for Ryan. He was alone in his bedroom one Friday afternoon when he lost his life. Ryan and his family had planned to spend the weekend at their lake-front cabin, enjoying the warm summer air. Ryan was looking forward to the outing just as much as everyone else was. But the Allrams' never made it to the cabin that weekend. Ryan's mother, Lou Ann, arrived home from work a little earlier than usual, so she could get things packed for the upcoming weekend. She went to Ryan's room to say hello and see how his day had been. What she found was more horrifying then anything she could ever imagine. More agonizing than anything she had ever felt. Her son laid pale and motionless, without breath, having accidentally choked to death at his own hand. Read local news coverage of Ryan's death... Ryan didn't intend to die that day. He was experimenting with a dangerous sexual exertion, called autoerotic asphyxiation (temporarily cutting off oxygen to various parts of the body in order to enhance sexual arousal). Family members believe he must have been doing it for some time, though he kept it from everyone, including his adored girlfriend, Michelle. No one knew. No one would have dreamed he was interested in something like that. But Ryan was interested in the practice, and so are many other teens throughout the country. Ryan was not alone; he was typical of many teens who secretly risk their lives experimenting with their newly found sexual identity. The number of accidental deaths caused by autoerotic asphyxiation has been steadily rising in the United States over the past 10 years. No one knows the exact numbers because the sexual exertion remains a secret until the person dies. If the person is lucky enough to cheat death, their sexual secret stays behind closed doors. If you think your teen might be interested in autoerotic asphyxiation, we urge you to talk to him or her about it. Tell them about Ryan and help them to learn from his mistake.
