The long-awaited sequel to Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, is a sophisticated new platform game for the Nintendo GameCube system. The player controls Mario, who's on holiday on the fanciful Isle Delfino. A mysterious clone of Mario has been defacing the island with graffiti and it's up to the real Mario to clean up the mess.

The main improvement over Mario 64 is the FLUDD - Mario's new mechanical backpack, which pumps water and enables him to hose away the filth his doppelganger has smeared everywhere. The backpack has multiple nozzle heads that change its function to suit the task at hand. It can blast water backwards to increase Mario's speed or shoot water downwards to serve as a jetpack. It even talks, intermittently giving advice in the event the player gets stuck.

Despite his portly figure, Mario is a spry little fellow who can jump around skillfully. An impressive selection of moves lets him leap off walls, twirl around on tightropes and bound effortlessly over tall buildings.

There are role-player elements to support the platform jumping action, too. The inhabitants of Isle Delfino can offer advice when asked, serving as an in-game help system. Even younger players will be able to handle the action.

The graphics and sound are polished but more impressive still is the fine attention to detail. Mario can get his clothes smeared with paint but a quick dip in the ocean will clean them up again. There are so many ways to interact with the environment that Super Mario Sunshine will be a compelling diversion even once the substantial main quest is completed.

Endgame: A vast and engaging world of fantasy that begs to be explored.
