RICHMOND, Va. –– "Dukes of Hazzard" star and congressional candidate Ben Jones is making campaign appearances in the TV show's Confederate flag-emblazoned hot rod, sparking a feud with the nation's first elected black governor.

Jones, who sells memorabilia from the 1970s and '80s show at his country store in Sperryville, is playing up his role as Cooter, the show's good ol' boy mechanic, in challenging GOP Rep. Eric Cantor in a heavily Republican district.

Former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder said he is troubled by the signals Jones is sending to the district's overwhelmingly white, rural and suburban electorate by using the gully-jumping 1969 Dodge Charger, known as the General Lee. To black voters, he said, it is a slap in the face.

"There has to be some recognition by the party leadership that they can't be involved in kowtowing to these subliminal messages," Wilder said. Jones, who served in Congress from 1989 to 1993, countered: "We're not trying to refight the war. We're just proud of our Southern heritage. We're NASCAR Democrats, and our priorities are right where they always were – take care of mama 'n them and make sure the kids get a good education."

In an open letter to state Democratic chairman Lawrence H. Framme III two weeks ago, Wilder expressed dismay over Jones' use of Confederate symbols and the party's acceptance of it.

The rift widened when Framme replied with his own open letter reminding Wilder that he saluted a Confederate flag during the dedication ceremony for a historic canal renovation in Richmond three years ago.

The letter also noted that Wilder's 1985 campaign for lieutenant governor bought commercial time during reruns of "The Dukes of Hazzard" and that Jones is a lifetime member of the NAACP.

"Knowing your deep commitment to civil rights, I am confident that you would not have placed paid advertising on 'Dukes of Hazzard' if you believed its constant display of the Confederate battle flag on an automobile was an affront to any voters, particularly African-Americans," Framme wrote.

Wilder, a grandson of slaves, banned Confederate flag patches from Virginia Air National Guard uniforms in 1990 after he became governor.

Great job, now thats what I call gerfetti!

Some of you boys are so talented, have you ever considered a career in graphic design? You could really incorperate some of these skills into design principle, with a little instruction and imagination.

Keep up the good work fella's!
