Graffiti gets money for charity

Slavery art to the highest bidder

At Roskilde Festival ’05, an auction was arranged in support of the fight against modern slavery. Pictures were donated by four graffiti artists. The auction took place from Thursday to Sunday and collected 3,925 DKK in total.

Modern slavery and graffiti art

This year, Roskilde Festival handed out a piece of canvas to four graffiti artists along with the message: ”the theme is modern slavery!” This resulted in four very different and fantastic works, displayed from Thursday to Sunday in DanChurchAid’s information stall at the slave tower. Here the festival guests could place an offer on a list that was closed on Sunday at 18.00.

Sarorn

The interest in the works was great – especially the painting of the girl Sarorn, who was one of the two faces in the ”Act Against Slavery” campaign, received a lot of biddings. Right until the last minute, people waited anxiously, hoping to become the owners of that exact picture they had placed a bid on.

The artist behind the work ”Sarorn”, which cashed in the largest amount, is called Maser and is from Dublin, Ireland. Along with the rest of the international designer team invited by Roskilde Festival, he has decorated the festival’s fences with his spray cans – but he managed to find time to use his artistic skills in advantage of the fight against modern slavery.
