woman gives birth to 4 pound rock

Recommended Posts

MALONGO, Congo -- In one of the most astounding cases in medical history, an African woman was pregnant for three years -- and when doctors finally delivered her baby, it was made of solid stone!

The four-pound fetus had died inside the mother’s body and calcified over time, according to Dr. Andrew Folley, who presented the bizarre case history on OBGYN.net, a medical-information Inter-net site.

No one was more astonished by the delivery of the stone baby than the 37-year-old mom, who was not identified by name.

According to Dr. Folley, the bewildered patient “stated that she had been pregnant about three years ago and everything seemed to be going fine, but ‘the baby never came out.’”

The woman, who lives in a remote village on the Congo River, had felt fine throughout all the years she carried the fetus.

But during a recent exam, a physician became concerned by her distended belly and feared she might have a uterine tumor.

Doctors conducted exploratory surgery on the woman’s abdomen. And they were stunned when they pulled a “large, calcified, spherical mass” out of the incision -- not initially recognizing it as a baby’s head.

“The diagnosis was finally made when a shoulder was delivered along with this mass,” reveals Dr. Folley.

Eventually, the intact, rock-solid remains of an entire baby were removed. The infant’s size indicated it had survived eight months -- almost to term.

It had been what doctors call an extrauterine pregnancy, an unusual and always fatal condition in which the fetus develops outside of the uterus.

The development of a stone baby -- known medically as a lithopedion -- is astronomically rare, occurring in only 0.0045 percent of pregnancies. The condition was first described in a treatise by the great physician Albucasis in the 10th century A.D.

The record is held by an Italian woman who carried a stone baby for a mind-bending 36 years, unaware that she was pregnant.
