SANTA CRUZ -- Taggers caused $2,000 to $3,000 in damage when they vandalized more than a dozen businesses around one downtown block late Tuesday or early Wednesday, police reported.

The vandals spray-painted tags on 12 businesses and etched monikers into the windows of two other shops on Pacific Avenue and Church, Cedar and Locust streets. The damage was discovered around 10 a.m. Wednesday, Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Rick Martinez said.

"There was some substantial damage to the businesses," he said.

No arrests have been made, but police suspect the vandals are part of a tagging crew that has caused thousands of dollars in damage across the county in the past couple of years.

It wasn't clear how many people were involved in the downtown vandalism, police said.

"One person with a hoodie and a backpack on a BMX bike can cover a lot of ground, so I don't want to speculate at this point as to how many could have been involved," Martinez said.

The graffiti doesn't appear to be related to the May Day riot, where anarchists shattered windows and caused other damage at 18 downtown businesses. The latest bout of vandalism also isn't gang-related, Martinez said.

But the graffiti still is frustrating for both police and business owners.

"I think everybody's certainly hit a saturation point with this type of senseless crime," Martinez said. "It's pointless. This tagging crew simply was doing this for notoriety."

One

downtown employee whose office is next door to one of the businesses that was tagged said she felt fortunate that her shop was safe but said the repeated incidents of vandalism are disheartening. She said her business is looking into installing surveillance cameras to increase security.

"It's too bad," said the employee, who declined to be named because she didn't want her business to become a target. "I just don't know why we can't have better control over it."

Police are reviewing videos from surveillance cameras in the area. They asked anyone with information about the vandalism to call the Investigations Bureau at 420-5820 or the anonymous tip line at 420-5995.
