who has the right to sell domain names? and how do THEY have access to giving them to you? i always wondered that.

 

like...

 

why the hell do i have to go through these people ot get a domain name? why are THEY charging? how did they hook me up with a domain name?

they register thousands of rnadom domain names and if you want to make a site that they already registered you have to buy it from them. genius.

its actually very complex but here are some basics.

 

the actual domain name service provider is called "internic" while registrars such as register.com only have the ability to register names with internic.

 

i am not entirely sure how you go about being a registrar.

 

you can register domain names in bulk which is cheaper and you can resell them.

 

theres a lot of people behind the domain name scene, these people have to regulate what you can register or id get out of hand. recently theyve added new extensions such as .biz and whatever, i could go on forever and ever on how big business has their hands in all this but it does really get extremely complex so i wont bother.
