The Progression of Styles for the Purpose of Teaching

http://www.dfected.net/zesto/SS.jpg'>

Well it's Summer time, and that means summer school!

Tesseract and I have been talking about creating a 'visual training bible'

Why? Well because it's about damn time!

So please contribute! More than just comments... this thread needs step-by-steps,

unfinished pieces, half drawn outlines, constructing colour schemes and more!

I know people will try to pull cards on this with comments like...

"Let the toys learn the hard way" and "It's only going to encourage biters"

Yeah... or maybe this thread will help a bunch of people get better,

and then raise the quality of the fourm.

and let me get it started.....

---

1. Find the basic shape of your letter.

This is the groundwork that all letters come from.

It's important to know how your hand relates to your full letters.

Here I've picked a very simple, classis R to work with.

2. Work out the size and proportions.

I used a classic calligraphy trick here. A pencil and a pen

are used together at the same time. This is a great way to perfect

the stress and [/i]slant of the letters. (look it up!)

This letter needs to be enlarged, as it's way to bunched up for my taste.

3. Corrected size and Shape.

I know that this is nothing more than a handstyle R,

but we are starting at the begining. I'm leaving the 'guide lines' on

to show that the line logic is correct. And for the record...

I dont actually make letters like this. Once you understand the principals,

you can freestyle all your curves and shapes. You just know where the lines should be.

4. K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stooopid)

So the letter is there and a basic straight 3D is on.

I know it's boring.. but there's enough people who post that haven't yet

mastered the most basic of letters.

5. Style

So this is the part that seperates the men from the boys.

Once again.. I've left the extra lines in there to show the previous steps.

This is where realy style some into play. Serifs, ghosts lines and under/overlaps

are used to add a little flair. And I added a 3D to clean up the overall shape.

My letter's actually looking really messed up with those

extra lines, but I think the point is clear...

A good letter can work on all levels, from handstyle to wildstyle.

using a tag as a guide for movement is a good way to map out a piece if your doing any style.but only as a line of movement.not a literal outline.its the way the art evolved.but i think your demonstration doesnt account for the thins and thickness in a piece .

^ I think you need both!

If people could all reach a certain artistic level without any help,

then we 'd all be out of a job. (so to speak)

And also.. the more people who paint without skill,

the more the general public acquaits us with gangs and vandals.

after teaching myself, over years, and then teaching people and watching them come up, I find that it is great on both hands..if you lack the pacients and stability, then sure find a teacher...but whatever..i am happy...

and zesto, I would post hella sketches and examples...but I do not have a penny to my name, i am sitting at work, and scannerless....

but in due time I wil have stuff posted.

I caught an elk yesterday..very refreshing

to add to Tesseract's point...

Some letter shapes are universal.

here's the nastiest thing I've ever posted...

but it's an example of how the same shape can exist in different places.

It's was an M scanned and fked with in photoshop for rotation, size etc.

(hey Dorkstar.. could you delete the image tags that didn't work. After tesseract and before electr..? thanks)
