i saw Jimmy Cliff last year at a music festival my city has every year, watched The Harder They Come in a film theatre and after it Jimmy Cliff was there to talk about the film and answer questions from the audience, he was a seriously knowledgeable guy, but had a kind of calm mellowness when he talks, (bit like Terry Callier has too) he looked in very good health for his age, so i don't buy the crack addict claim...as if that wasn't good enough, later that night went to see Lee Scratch Perry play live on a wee ferry, fucking fantastic :p

What... I cant believe noone has mentioned the Skatalites yet...

 

IMHO reggea wouldn't be what it is today without innovators like these guys, just on a side note they played back up for just about every Wailing Wailers song.

 

And just to represent with the old school ska - every group/solo act on a Coxsone Dodd Studio One, Duke Reid (the Trojan), Prince Buster, Tom the Great and King Edwards recording. Believe that.
