ISLAMABAD, May 31 (PNS): Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan on Thursday signed an agreement for the construction of a gigantic gas pipeline that would originate in Daulatabad (Turkmenistan) and would terminate at Gwadar while passing through Afghanistan.

As per the agreement, a pre-feasibility study of the project has been commissioned that would look into the project in the changed circumstances. The estimated cost of the 1500-kilometre gas pipeline project ranges from $2-3 billion.

After signing the agreement at a public ceremony in Islamabad, the three leaders described the pipeline as the shortest route for transportation of gas from Central Asia to Japan, Far East and other regions of the world.

The agreement-signing ceremony was held after a trilateral meeting between President General Pervez Musharraf, President Saparmurat Niyazov and Afghan leader, Hamid Karzai. President Musharraf said that under the agreement a new feasibility report would be produced, which would be followed by international tendering for getting a firm to execute the process and in the last stage financial support would be sought from international institutions such as World Bank and Asian Development Bank.

In the trilateral meeting the three leaders also decided to establish three working groups including working group on gas pipeline; working group on road and railway links; and working group on economic and trade cooperation.

Addressing the joint press conference that followed the agreement signing ceremony, President Musharraf said that the three leaders had an in-depth discussion on a wide range of issues of common interests. He said that they discussed the issue of construction of the pipeline and development of transport links and cooperation between the three countries in other fields.

To a question, Musharraf said Pakistan was committed to provision of gas to India through a pipeline from Iran or any other country. President Niyazov gave the technical details of the project.

Responding to a question relating to security of the project, Karzai said that stability and security inside Afghanistan was satisfactory. He said that convening of Loya Jirga was another step towards stability in the region.
