blackbook question (not flix)

my 50 cents

i usually get my son`s black books from pearl paint in nyc, he goes thru them like water (pokemon phreak and draws them like web one kaos does outlines...fast)...they`re the cachet brand 1.800.322.2438, i use the same ones also, really good paper absorb the colors nicely and your artwork should last about 5 - 20 years with minumum fading, depending on what medium u use and it does matter what you use, i stay at the 8.5 x 11 joint cause they don`t drain your markers as much and allow you to move around the page quicker for easier fading, if your goin to the wall get a wire bound joint for outside activity, like it was said b4 you can fold it back and do your thang...but that cover will desinergrate(don`t know if i spelt that correctly) but use that for ur outside book, your indoor bible should be hardbound, tho they are a bitch to work but with a lil imagination you can conquer that, i use the giant black clamps for holding the book open, but if i`m doing a spread i`ll get an oversize piece of paper with 2 sided tape to protect the paper from over spray of the airbrush....take this into account my second blackbook(really wack in my eyes) and third(evolution into style) completely filled were sold to private investors for $3,000, web one kaos whos done complete COVER TO COVER 12 books over his 20 odd years career sold his books for a hefty amount to a private investor, tkid had cats from germany sending books to do at $1,000 to $5,000 a pop, so yes it does matter because if your work is just starting in about 5 years who knows where this artform is goin and who knows whom may make you an offer you can`t refuse because there are people who love this art form but only want to collect....my bad for the endless chatter...roler one tm7

YUP, it truly DOES matter. I make sure that my books have "Archival"(or "acid-free") paper. I have seen many good books yellow and deteriorate over the years, and if your stuff ever becomes collectable like Big Roler's has, acidic pages or tape on them will seriously devalue your work. The first writer I heard talk about longevity of acid-free paper was Dondi (R.I.P.), whose works on paper are now highly collectable. Dude was on TOP of his game and ahead of his time.

yeah, but this one goes up to 11.

? As the Cantonese say: mo lai to- "makes no sense." you can do your whole piece on a passenger train, a handball court, 8.5x11 paper, 4x5 notecard (shit look at the watercolors Frank Frazetta did on notecards) or the back of a matchbook if you just scale it to fit.

i dunno about u but i like using thick ass papers... some prefer thinner paper so the markers can soak thru the page and look better than a thick one which doesn't allow the marker to soak thru. stick with canson they're great paper. i have a hardbound canson 80 lbs. (hard decision over wire bound) and i still find then a bit thin for marker work. but still it works great. so i can't imagine how much 60 lbs bleeds..... and i dun think that any other blackbooks go up more than 80 lbs i've seen... (or do they?). and another thing is i dun like free doodling in my blackbook that's a waste of paper (yes i'm cheap haha) and it makes ur book look bad if the doodle is ugly...

PS. after how many years of writing did u guys start sketching in a blackbook?

Ok for me i have two types of books i use like roler mentioned.I use hardbounds for my more detailed work. And then i use sprial bound for the pieces that im going to paint, so this book gets more abuse. When i first started writing i just used spirals as a sort of book and used those to practice, and i mean practice alot.It seriously was about a year or two till i started rocking a hardbound.

yo SilpherGirl, this is a good thread, and i wish i had this kinda advice when i was comin up, also you should have at least three types of books, one for strickly your burners(ur bible), one you pass around and let it be known whether you want taggin in it and one for walls...hold it down and keep practicing...one

i'm quite surprised by how many of u said u prefer wire bound ones! becos so far 90% of all the blackbook flix i've seen on the net are hard bound ones.... just went to michaels today, they only carry strathmore and canson blackbooks. the strathmore ones are much thinner tho... only 60 lbs paper thickness. will the markers bleed thru? cos the cansons are 80 lbs but they're much more expensive..

trust me, the wire bound is gay. u'll just end up losing a shitload of sheets. get u a medium sized book to start out with. i'm working out of 3 medium books as we speak. the large is cool. more space.....hence more markers to buy. but u can do some huge work in those large ones. hope this was helpful. lonsta tm7

RE: the blackbook

yeah roler has good tips and heed to them wisely. if u are a slob like me, ur black book will eventually look like ass with bindings coming apart, overspray, spilt beer, and maybe some ALBERT TACO'S . out of 4 books i have, only like 2 are salvageable. i destroy everything i touch so that's how it is. as for outside books. yeah right. i'll put an outline on anything, sometimes a napkin from Dennys . that way i don't do even more damage to the stuff i've done in the books. so my advice is keep ur books away from walls. u never know what could happen. just some quick info from the barracks. lonsta tm7

Once again,

Hard bound with (acid free) archival paper will last a hundred years and wont stain (unless you're a slob). it's not expensive and wire spirals get all jacked up from being put in and out of napsaks.

I guess if you're still a toy, it does'nt matter what you get. If you're gonna spend a hunk of change ($15) on a nice blackbook your shit should look good enough to want to protect.

Don't get me wrong, I know some skilled writers who sketch ill shit on anything while steady talkin' about: "I should've sketched this in my blackbook yo".

Who cares if you got an inch of unaccessable paper on a hardbound. Is it the hard bound or is it lack of handskills?

There are two reasons for ripping out pages.

1) you fucked up.

2) you're trading, selling or giving a page away.

Use a straight edge. You're gonna need one anyway if you want to get rid of the perferated leaves left by taring off a page from a spiral bound.

If paper is paper, then you kids can use some 'charmen'. A Blackbook is a smart thing to have. It's a portfolio. It's got better presentation and it protects your shit.

I got a 15 year old 'Strathmore' (acid free) that has outlasted most of my newer peice books.

Who gives a fuck what any of us write on? Give a fuck what you want to write on.

that's because I tore them out!

then they become ink stoppers.

You know when you do a page, then look back and think "whoa ... bad idea".

Then you tear it out.

feels good too!

yeah alot of people mentioned not to bring your books to walls with you. this is true. DO NOT BRING YOUR BOOK PAINTING WITH YOU. for one, when i paint, i like to paint and step back a little usually onto my book. the amount of pages, ive seen with foot prints on them brings tears to my eyes. secondly is the over spray. you may not even realise how my over spray there is when you paint unless you leave a pristeen white sheet of paper on the floor when your painting. Another reason why you should not take your book for walkies is that if you suddenly have to dash off then your short one black book full of six months of hard work.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR BLACK BOOK PAINTING.

bye now.
