i hate it that Hawaii has to be a place for tourists....you mainlanders might not even know....

but we're not allowed to send out our wine or make money...

all hawaii is used for is a place for the rich "american" or japanese to take a break.

we are about to legalize gambling....there [i think] will be so much homeless people after that......

hawaii is the "comand of the Pacific".in other words, without Hawaii....the westcoast is fucked.....

i look around and see how things are changing,"becoming more like the mainland...its sad really...

its not just that this small group of islands go by the very mainstream of things.....its that HAWAIIAN CULTURE IS DYING..

"from what i see"

i love it here, its paradice.....people are down and more friendly and respectful than you will ever know.....

if you view it this way.....the changes i see in Hawaii...is the proof that i see that this world is doomed......

but i hope that one day that the people of Hawaii will change the world...

we have love.....some of us are stupid "mokes" that hate you all...

its only because you destroy things and care too much about the system...the system i call EVIL.

this group of islands is not your relaxation grounds...its a wake up call..

learn to be human people..

people as human as seeking innocense dont even know...

this place will change you .....and you will realize.

ALOHA

IF I MISSED ANYTHING,LET A BRADDAH KNOW.

i like to move around a lot...cause i spread aloha spirit...the only reason that i really moved back,is cause i was running out of this spirit.

yes,it is....

my homies call hawaii the corruptor, but i say that they lie and its the corruptor corrupting hawaii......

it might sound hypocritical when i say,"come on down!",but i mean it in a different way.....like i said,"hawaii is a wake up call."

come and wake up!

i was a monster before i came back home....these ocean waters cleanse my soul...when ever i get sick...i go to the beach.i feel cured of any sickness...even evil.

i am more of a man in hawaii.

something about it i cant explain....

dont change Hawaii, let it change you...

come on down......:D

i completely agree. although im not hawaiian, i did live on kauai for two years and became pretty attatched to the lifestyle and culture there. whenever i have the scratch to get a piece of land it will be there. im worried that by that time kauai will be just like oahu tho. i was watching a show on national geographic last night about global warming and how a lot of the pacific islands are goin to be swallowed up because of the rapid rise of the sea. and most of the damage is from the united states. these peoples homes and cultures are goin to be washed away, literally, because people are unbelievalbly selfish and compassionless. to make a significant difference in the situation the US would have to cuz CO2 levels by 80 percent and they could save the islands from further damage; guess what they agreed on: 6 fuckin % reduction! i saw this shit last night and its all facts. the marshal islands were the main focus of the program and theyre in bad shape! the water levels are rising dramatically and people are having to move inland. their economy depends on tourism but they cant build a sufficient tourism industry if its going to be underwater in a few years. i think its time the people of the US rise up arms against the government. ill just be in australia watching ur progress. good luck!!!!

I'm actually writing a short research paper about the pseudo "survival" of Hawaiian culture. More portions of it have survived than other native cultures, but it's rapidly dying. Only something like 4% of people living in Hawaii are actually pure Hawaiian...4% of the entire population. What largely exists today is a tourist friendly, coconut shaking, plastic lei, waterfront property, bastardized version of the culture. There are efforts...schools which teach pure hawaiian kids ONLY in the hawaiian language, culture, customs...but this is a small portion of it all. The land does change you. It gives you humanity and warmth, and spirit, even if you had none. But in the end, even locals are dickish Americans now, in response to what's happening.

The thing is...I don't see this changing. It's horrible...we've got it right in front of us. We have one of the ancient cultures still among us...one that we haven't completely decimated yet...but there's nothing done about it. I don't think we'll ever see legislation for the independence of Hawaii. It makes too much money for other people.

i totally agree that the hawaiian culture, is a beautiful thing. and still is. but in essence, the aloha spirit you talk of isn't purely the spirit of the acient Hawaiians. i think it is a mix of the ancient culture and the culture of Hawaiians like 80 years ago. because back in the day of Ali'i and mkaainana, there was a huge seperation of power andequality. and i don't think, (by what i assume your attitude about government is), you would like to be a commoner back in the day. the rules were set so strictly that you could be killed for standing in the shadow of an Ali'i. times were tough back then as they are today. but i do see how it is amazing how they had the ability to work in nature and preserve it's essece so perfectly. from the ahpua'a of growing kalo, to the way they preserved the native birds, while getting feathers for the royal cloaks. and if possible i wish there were a way to still care for the land with such ferver, but the world has changed a lot. it's not only the u.s. who is in need of a strong economy. it's the whole worl that depends on money to make things work. and it really is impossible to make all the worlds technology, buinsses, cities, countries, ect, run on aloha spirit. so there are power plants, governments, and shitty jobs to make the world go round. so in the world we live in today, Hawaii needs a way to stay afloat. and it decided to depend on tourism. i don't neccesarilly agree with that choice, but it's what we have to deal with. and frankly our economy is in the shitter. at first i thought that a casino would hurt Hawaii, cause i think gambling has the ability to hurt people. but then i thought of all the help it would give to the economy, and frankly a lot of people want it here. and by not alowing it to be legalized, just because i thought some people wight go and gamble away there money leaving them homeless. i realized that, that is their own damn choice. and i don't want the government making my choices of what's best for me. because that is communism. and i don't like that one bit.

i don't know if i made any sense. but i was trying to say is that we need tourists here now for the benifit for everyone in the islands. but we need to start finding a way to keep the aloha spirit alive, as well as the culture and land in all this mess we have. and i hate stupid ignorant mokes.

ok i can see why some of u guys hate inlanders but, hawai isnt the first culture to be destroyed by westerners. just because u are american or just because u arent form hawai dosn't mean that u think like that of all corporate america. i would hate to go to hawai and be looked at like i'm some fool lookin to destroy your culture... shit my culture has been swiped of the face of the earth lol... its up to native hawaians to keep that culture alive and its also up to your children to learn it. if you are really worried about it u should try and see if u can gte something going like a meeting at cityhall. if not then your culture is a doomed as the others.

i agree with you guys as a culture, i am part hawaiian, but one thing that bugs me is that i really don't recognize i'm hawaiian due to the fact how ignorant, stubborn and ego trippin many of the braddahs are. but for the culture, trying to keep the aloha spirit alive is something i do and everyone else should too. ain't it funny though no matter how hard we try to keep hawaii, hawaii that it's starting to back fire. cause all these big mainland corporations are doing things "hawaiian" from tshirts, aloha shirts, aloha prints, stationary, etc... that many of the things are no longer unique to hawaii......

at least we're not like the chamorro people of guam. the spanish destroyed their whole culture, they don't even know the indigenous language. i'm optimistic, with the growth of hawaiian language emersion schools and growth of the sovereignty awareness there will be a stronger renaissance. during my grandmothers generation, white people made hawaiians ashamed to be hawaiian, thats why they didn't pass on the language and all the kids spoke english only. in the seventies there was a cultural renaissance, and in the nineties sovereignty movements were popping up. i just think that in the future there will be not one local culture, but two seperate and distinct cultures in hawaii. whatevahs, we go drink :spent:

i hear about all these changes for hawaii for future times, how harris wants the people of hawaii to be scientists..makes me luagh, but i guess its cool.

sandy beach... shouldnt be a shore break...the push the sand up to the wall...what used to be like 6 feet tall.the reason why they do this, is come some dumbass fell and sued.

with all the sand pushed up...there is no sand bar.

[just another one of my complaints]

i guess what im trying to say in this one, is that i hate how people tend to kiss ass,to be cool.

like the homie said how they made his grandmother ashamed...

its funny..i went through a lot of hatred in the mainland...principal askin if i can speak english, teachers callin me stupid, gettin beat up everyday for the way i spoke....

but my homie GATAS is from LA...he was livin here for a while and got in good with the locals..he goes back to LA and in highschool, they stick him in a english class "as a second language"..cause he spoke da KINE.

i bet i have more hawaiian blood in me than anyone else replying to this thread and i feel like i should respond to some of the things being said here. first off, i cannot stand it to hear people say shit like "oh--the old ways weren't perfect--if the u.s. didn't take over hawaii japan would have and blah blah blah." fuck that--the monarchy wasn't perfect but that was our government, that was a hawaiian nation. from what i understand, people were happy under liluokalani and even if there was strict laws within the monarchy, i'd rather get shot for standing in an ali'i's shadow than die from a plague that the haoles brought on us--or watch hotels go up over sacred grounds.

do you know why the hawaiian language got lost for so many years? because the white settlers banned its use in school and in public, in order to keep the hawaiians learning in a second language (this is where pidgeon was born-- english spoken with the gramatical rules of hawaiian), to keep the hawaiians uneducated and poor. hawaiians were intentionally kept uneducated and poor so they wouldn't have the tools they needed to stop their culture from getting raped in the ass. christianity, english, democracy, all of it was forced down our throats, and anyone who tried to fight it ended up in jail or dead. did you ever hear about the "drowning" accidents that happened to hawaiians who spoke out against the united states? yea that's a likely story. how many hawaiians drown in the water they grew up swimming in?

i wish that hawaii could get soveignity from the u.s., i think it should be a territory like puerto rico is. it makes no sense that it's a state--but it's too late now. the damage is too great to be reversed. the way i see it, all the haole army brats should just stay on their base and do what they should have done to begin with--leave us the fuck alone. stay in your nice houses and we'll stay in the low income developments--but don't expect us to be your best friends when you come to our neck of the woods. i'm not about to just forget about years of repression. i look at my ohana as my blood relatives, and my hawaiian brothers--if your a tourist who just happened to stay here for 5 years and not go home, you're not my ohana. and my "aloha spirit" stays with my family--i don't need to spread it to anyone else. my motto is "Family, Friends, or FUCKOFF." so that's why whenever i go back to the islands i spend most of my time on molokai, one of the last places that's really hawaiian. sorry about the rant. hawaii should be free but it sucks that it's not gonna happen.

no. pidgin was formed by immigrant children playing together who coudn't understand each other, mostly asians. pidgin was spoken on plantations. hawaiians of that time spoke standard english and didn't work on plantations. pidgin eventually worked its was to being more english (at this point its technically a creole language) and this is when hawaiian kids picked it up, and added many hawaiian words.

don't wanna argue with you bro, i feel the same about everything else you say, i just fucking hate hawaiians insisting i'm not hawaiian because i speak standard english. kalakaua, liliuokalani, and all the other monarchs during the post-contact era spoke standard english.

i bet a lot of u know this but i bet theres some cats on here that dont knowthat hawaii still isnt officially (legally) a state of the US. technically, its still a nation of its own. the United States never went through the process of making it a state with the UN or whoever they have to go to to do that. before the US came hawaii had quite a few embassies all over the world, including great britain(im not sure, but i think they mightve even been a part of the UN). the US goes in, sets up plantations, integrates itself into the country, and then stabs em in the back. its been a little while since my hawaiin histlory class so i dont know all the names involved. but, basically, the leader of the honolulu rifle something or other sent away for marines because the hawaiians were becoming hostile and they were going to be attacked (which was a total lie) and so the marines came down and they strong armed liliuokalani to give up her nation. she peacefully protested the ultimatum from her palace, where she was imprisoned. anyway, hawaii was stolen by plantation owners from the US and eventually the US decided it was cool and they would just keep hawii illegally. fucked up shit. im gonna start studying up ont his for real. there're many coalitions in hawaii trying to become sovergn(or soveregn) now. everyone that cares about the pacific islanders needs to step up and try and help out if we dont want to see them in the ocean over the next few years. i hate bush!!!!!!!
