Graffiti giving too much color to downtown

By: Eric Allen

Downtown Austin is becoming more colorful, but not necessarily in a good way. Over the past three months, the Downtown Austin Alliance has noticed a major increase in graffiti.

"According to our records we're not really showing that great of an increase ... whereas people are remarking on it more because their seeing it more because of the public places it's appearing," said Austin Police Department Officer Desiree Small.

Part of the problem of reporting on graffiti is you give the "tagger," the person creating the graffiti, exactly what they want - publicity of their so-called art work. APD does not think that this is art. "You feel violated when your property is destroyed," said Small. "It's not nice; it's not right."

Jose Luis Aguilar, who sells ice cream in East Austin, is tired of seeing the graffiti.

"It's ugly; it's bad because nothing should be written on," Aguilar said (translated from Spanish). "It should be nice ... nice and clean. For that reason, it's best that they paint over what they sprayed."

Most graffiti consists of signatures, not necessarily gang-related events. Some graffiti is actually welcomed. Tim Sheehan, owner of Ruto Maya, a coffee and tobacco shop, allowed a graffiti artist to paint a mural in front of his building.

"Well to be honest, it's a little hard for me to see it as art," said Sheehan. "I see them as artists who have a lot of talent. I see it as one person's expression. And as long as it's done with permission and doesn't affect the property owner in an adverse way, I think there's a place for it."

At least two different organizations get rid of graffiti in Austin.

The Downtown Austin Alliance contracts with a private company and APD uses the city's Graffiti Abatement Program.

i think austin would be a lot more bombed if it wasn't for the ridiculous buff!i can understand the store owners and all, but buffing dumpsters and mail boxes, and poles?

your list of bombers isn't representative of austin either.

drain bamage- I can’t find a single thing about the guy that got hit by the train. This is what I know: The guy was walking on the tracks near Mopac and Woodward(?). The train struck him as he tried to jump out of the way. He suffered a broken leg, broken hip, etc. Last I heard he was being treated at Seton. The problem with all this information is that I heard it on a news radio program, and I haven’t been able to find any hard-copy stories on the event. It’s as if it never happened. I’ll post if I hear anything else, though.

Spoter- I know what you’re saying about the buff. It seems like every time I see something, it gets buffed within a day (especially anything along the highway). I’ve actually seen store owners buffing the walls in their parking lots just a few hours after they were hit. Do you remember when Inferno (the dance club on 6th) had a bunch of writers do a mural on the side of their building? A lot of people thought it was really cool (even a few people that I know don’t like graffiti thought it was quite creative), but the Sixth Street Commision made them buff it within a week. They said that it “violated advertising codes in Austin” or some sh*t like that. Also, I know my list of Austin bombers isn’t very representative of the Austin scene, but those are the people that I see up the most in my area.

Here you go, guys. This is the mural that I spoke of on the side of Club Inferno. I know these photos are old, so I don’t want to hear anybody complaining about it. This is just so you can see what I’m talking about.
