Back In The Days, Italian's Wore Barrets...

Recommended Posts

This is a book called "Back In The Days" by Jamel Shabazz. Truley is a great joint...

Jamel Shabazz's work should be known to all. If Bambaataa was the grandfather of hip-hop, Shabazz is the James Brown of hip-hop photography. With the surge in popularity of hip-hop culture in the last 5 years, Shabazz's work has been an important link to the early 80s roots, gracing the pages of magazines and record covers. And if you've seen any of his work, then you've been grabbed by the dimensionality of his photographs: the background, the pose, the gear, the expression, the color. Now imagine an entire book of Shabazz's photography, the information overload told through a reoccurring theme: the "cool pose." Fab Five Freddy does an enlightening job in the book's introduction breaking down the cultural significance of the pose, and once you understand that, this book becomes so much more. Aesthetically this book is a blinged out 10, no doubt, but add the near-history context (this was only 20 years ago), and this book is invaluable. Let me stop with the muddle, peep some pages and let Brooklyn in the house. Over 100 full color pages with end word by Jamel Shabazz.
